This book sat on my shelf for years!

Recently, I was compelled to get that book off the shelf and read it. I can't say for certain, but it felt like a dream had said, "Read the Latent Power of the Soul." Whatever the inspiration, I did read it, and wished it had been sooner! I cannot understand why anyone would feel this book was controversial. It helped me to understand about dividing the spirit and soul in Hebrews, a Biblical concept I had never heard expounded in years of churchgoing in various denominations. "New wine" of the spirit cannot abide in the "old bottles" of the soul. As we let go the "old, outer man" and allow the Holy Spirit to dwell in the inner holiness of our Temple, our soul takes its rightful place as the sanctuary, with our body being the outer court--all necessary, but in that order. Too many of us are ruled by the cravings of the flesh, when it should be in submission. This book helps make it simple, if not easy. I know now why I was led to buy this book in the first place!

One of Nee's shorter books, but still enlightening

Man is tripartite - spirit, soul, and body. Prior to the fall of man, there was the spirit, linking man with the Divine, which was the highest; the body, connecting man with the material, the lowest; intermediate stood the soul, partaker of the nature of the others, the bond that united them and through which they could act on each other. Nee speculates that since it is written "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness" (Gen. 1.26), that image and likeness would be repetitive if it merely meant physical attributes. He was already like Him in outward appearance, but he was ordained by God to become like Him morally, so that man could have dominion over the earth, as he was originally instructed by God.

When Adam fell in the garden of Eden this moral likeness along with its power was immobilized. He had not lost this power altogether, only it was now buried within him. Man had become flesh, and his flesh now enclosed tightly this marvelous power within it. Generation has succeeded generation with the result that this primordial ability of Adam has become a "latent" force in his descendants. As a result, Satan attempts to break open this fleshly shell and to release the power dormant in man's soul in order to gain control over man - so that man can be deceived into thinking he is as God. Many do not understand this strategy, accepting these powers as being of God. For example, I've actually heard several people say that John Edwards, who allegedly communicates with the dead, has a God-given gift!

Nee gives the example of Buddhist monks that, through ascetic practices, eventually attain to the elimination of all food. He mentions that some monks of high degree can even pierce the unknown past and predict the future and perform many other wonders by Buddhist magic. Nee explains that the engaging in all of these different kinds of abstinences and ascetic practices flows from one single governing principle: the Buddhist is attempting to break all physical and material bonds so as to get his soul power released from its subservience to the flesh.

Whether it is in China or in Western nations, all of these practices of breathing, ascetic exercise, hypnosis, prediction, and psychic communications are but the release and manifestation of the latent power of the soul. Satan makes use of man's soul force to manifest his strength. Man's soul power is Satan's working instrument, through which he works out his evil end.

God, though, never works with man's soul power, for it is unusable to Him. When we are born again, we are born of the Holy Spirit. God works by the Holy Spirit and our renewed spirit. Since the fall, God has forbidden man to again use his original power of the soul. It is for this reason that Jesus often declares how we need to lose our soul life, that is, our soul power. God wishes us today not to use this soul power at all, but instead depend on Him. This is Nee's warning and admonition to Christians about brilliant displays of psychic ability - to flee from them.

This book is very short, but the warning need not be long. To make a long book out of the subject would simply feed man's curiousity about the subject, which is what Nee is trying to warn against in the first place. Note that this very short work is included in "The Complete Works of Watchman Nee", so the reader may find that purchasing that product is a better total value.

Fred H. Smith is a biological antrhopologist with specific interests in human paleontology and functional anatomy. He teaches courses in human paleontology, human osteology, introductory biological anthropology, and the paleolithis prehistory of Europe and Africa.

best book on the market

this is far the best textbook on human evolution currently available on the market. Matt Cartmill's insights into evolutionary mechanisms, mammalian & primate evolution, combined with Fred Smith's vast knowledge of human fossil record make this a very happy intelectual marriage. Further, both are great teachers with years of experience working with students. Although the book is quite detailed and voluminous, don't be scared off by this. The way they use scientific data is to tell a story - it is not ( unlike some other books out there) just another too detailed overview of everything there is. These guys tell us a human story and make sure to guide us along the way. Easy to read and with extensive list of used references. If you're seriously getting into the field of paleoanthropology, treat yourself with this volume. You won't be sorry.

Excellent Current Update in a Field Ever in Motion

We have badly needed a readable book on this subject that incorporates the latest discoveries and can relate them to the major landmarks in paleoanthropology. I especially enjoyed the section on Saint Cesaire, a crucial figure in the Late Neanderthal period.
I do not agree with the authors' explanation of the single-species theory. Its modification is that it began after Lucy, specifically with the great example we have of Nariokotome Boy. It is highly possible that, from that point on, we have had a single species with high diversity. Nariokotome Boy straddles the bridge between present-day East African typologies and Lucy, but it is more of "us" than anything we have preceding it. This epic-in-a-nutshell book is too cautious with the Cro-Magnon remains, and not as informative as we would have liked about the period c 34,00-26,000 BC. It does not mention Chauvet Cave. But anything from Prof Fred Smith is most welcome. His tone is always balanced and he never goes to extremes. His paper on the Assimilation Theory remains a classic landmark in Modern Paleoanthropology. He has a good instinct to find the center in a wide spectrum of views, which in itself is a special talent. He helps to bring the extreme wings under pressure without any seeming effort. But for my preferences, I felt the authors dwelt too much on the non-sapiens and too little on the current cutting edge of the newest discoveries of sapiens fossils. But this is certainly a very helpful and readable update contribution to the field.

Trouble with Kindle figures; a very good book.

The problem about technical text Kindle Editions it's the figures. They are out off text. You need to go backward and forward (annotate in a notebook the abreviations, etc.) to understand the text and to watch the figure; it's not good.

The text is good and extensive. The approach in palaeobiology of our ancestors (begning with bacteria, fish, amphibians, etc.) is through; it is very good book.

Muhammad Ali is the former three-time world heavyweight boxing champion. He and his wife, Lonnie, have established the Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky, to preserve and share the legacy and ideals of Muhammad Ali. Hana Ali is a writer. She lives in Michigan, near her father and stepmother.

Incredible book, a must read. There's a NYTimes quote on back cover that says "it's like getting Ali alone in a room and hearing him answer all the questions one ever thought to ask." No topic is off limits, from personal relationships to his fights, even his car ride from Phili to NY with Frazier. I didn't want this book to end. Ali was truly the greatest of all time, there will never be anyone like him again.

I did not know much about the champ and I am glad for that

I was assigned to reasearch ali for a blog post, so I bought this book with no expectations.

WOW. This is an crisp, fast paced well written book - the story of a life that deserves the taelnted authorship of Mr Durham along with the gift of Toni Morrison's editing. I did not know much about the champ and I am glad for that, as I was litreally astounded at the rich depth of his spiritual, physical, emotional and relational life. Well told tale about a well lived life.

I am inspired to be more after this read, both as a writer and as a citizen of this world.

The Greatest Indeed

The best book I’ve read about Muhammad Ali. It captures him at a period when he was most honest about how white supremacy functions in America. It features really candid stories about his dealing with racist whites before and after his fame. Stories like him being chased by a white gang trying to steal his gold medal and a man visiting him before a fight with his body having been mutilated by white terrorists. Forget about books like SOUL OF A BUTTERFLY that represents an older more mellow Ali. This is the man in all his glory. A perfect example of why I always prefer autobiographies written by the person the autobiography is about. We all know white people love to distort the legacies of famous Black resisters to white supremacy so read this and ignore the bs.

A fine modernist survey of design philosophy

This is a fine survey of philosophy of design -- a snapshot of a rapidly evolving field in its current state. Unlike some surveys, however, the book makes no attempt at neutrality, and is written from a qualifiedly pro-Modernist perspective.

I actually enjoyed the Modernist perspective of this book and found it inspiring precisely because I disagree with so much of it. The ideas are sharply and clearly presented, and it stimulated me to develop my own objections and counterarguments.

If the book has any serious fault it is the inadequate attention it gives to human-centered design, which has been one of the most fertile areas of design practice in the last couple of decades -- and a goldmine of fresh philosophical problems.

Don't start trading without it.

I have two copies of Trading to Win; one I lend to my traders, and one I keep for myself.
I have been involved in running a professional trading firm for the past three years. At first, there were only a handful of books to help an individual transition from active investing, to trading. These days, it seems, there is a new title introduced every few days. I look at the majority of these books, and few are worth reading from cover to cover.
Trading to Win is an exception. This book deals with the psychology of trading in a more thorough way than any book I've read. As insightful as Elder's Trading for a Living, with more detail on the psychology of winning, and a more updated perspective. Ari Kiev takes his readers through a step-by-step process, showing them how to build their personal psychologies and become "master traders". He compares trader training to the training of Olympic athletes in a way that is accurate and interesting to read. There are numerous questions and quizes in the book, designed to keep readers on track while creating their personal psychological strategies.
Bottom line: In order of importance, your average trader usually puts psychology far behind trading technique. If he worked more on understanding and developing the motivations that governed his trades, maybe he wouldn't be so average.
Buy the book and plan on reading it numerous times.

A "how to" on Life.....oh, and trading too.

If you've read any books on zen or books like the The Inner Game of Tennis and came away with a little something extra then this book will fit perfectly into your library of READ books. For me, it was really a book about trusting your yourself, your gut, trusting your feal and not getting sidetracked by the conscious brain, anxiety, down days, trusting the work you've put into something, understanding your anxiety, not running from your fears, but rather coddling them, and not letting them run your decision making process. Yes, it's a 'how to' for trading, but its also something a little more intelligent (useful for the real world too). By reading this book, you put your faith in Ari and his successful devotees such as Steve Cohen (forward) who have been incredibly successful in trusting their feal and you learn to trust yourself. Yes, some people have better feal than others. But, what trade to win tries to impress that will help you get closer to victory is that its the trusting yourself (not getting sidetracked), visualizing, taking calculated positions-not gambling, setting realistic/yet stretch goals that help you steadily build up your success rate (applicable really to anything, not just trading). Put it this way, I found so much of value in this book on trading, analysis, and life, that the book is totally marked up and I'm probably going to HAVE to buy another copy. Really worth while for amateur traders, pro traders, non-traders, portfolio managers and analysts alike, and anybody for that matter.

The Softer Side of Trading

Ari Kiev's book Trading to Win might seem like just psycho-babble to some traders. That is odd, given that some of these same critics are devout followers of technical analysis, which premises that psychology factors firmly into market movements. Why then is it such heresy to believe that you can improve the performance of a trader by working on his psychology?
It is not a strange concept to Steve Cohen, who hired Ari Kiev as a "trading coach" for his hedge fund S.A.C. Kiev, who was profiled in Jack Schwager's Stock Market Wizards , teaches that traders need to stretch themselves in the goals they set. They also need to eliminate the negative thinking that prevents them from reaching those goals. Much of Trading to Win is thus actually "common sense" (as is most psychology, it seems), but sometimes it is useful to hear someone reiterate sound principles.
One principle for which critics have taken Kiev to task is his suggestion that traders should set or raise their profit goals, which seems like a veritable "no no" from a risk management perspective. The criticism misses the fact, however, that Kiev is really saying that raising your performance goals means raising your work ethic. What are you going to do to raise your game? Squeezing out extra percentage points of return requires getting onto the trading floor hours earlier (or hours later) than you normally would-and researching companies more assiduously on paper or by working the phones harder. Moreover, Kiev actually recommends stricter risk management through such time-tested techniques as understanding your reasons for each trade, as well as the setting of target entry and exit prices. He also wants you to figure out if fears and doubts are keeping you from cutting your losses and riding your winners.
This book is clearly not for everyone; it is easily too "touchy feely" for traders concerned solely with the quantitative or more tangible aspects of trading. Kiev also tends to float heavily from topic to topic, often without a clear path. But for those traders who wonder how "fixing their heads" might result in greater success, Trading to Win is definitely worth a read.
