About the Author
Wayne A. Secord, Ph.D., was recently appointed by the University of Central Florida as the College of Health and Public Affairs Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders. He is also currently the Director of the National Center for Speech-Language-Pathology in Schools (NCSLPs) in Cincinnati, OH. The NCSLPs is a joint project of the University of Cincinnati (UC) and Miami University (MU). It is supported by a Project of National Significance Grant from the US Department of Education. Dr. Secord served as the Coordinator of School Speech-Language Pathology at The Ohio State University (OSU) from 1989 to 1995 and Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northern Arizona University (NAU) from 1995 to 2000. He is a Fellow of the Ohio Speech & Hearing Association (OSHA) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and has received awards for outstanding service or clinical achievement from UC, OSU, OSHA, the ASHA Foundation, and the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY). He has authored or co-authored numerous articles, books, tests and intervention programs on assessment and treatment of speech and language disorders, and served as the Editor of Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, a major ASHA journal, from 1992 to 1998. A former school speech-language pathologist, Dr. Secord is a frequent conference presenter and a nationally recognized expert on clinical and educational assessment and the delivery of school-based services for children with special needs.

Good information, but not worth the cost

Given how expensive the book was, I was expecting a whole lot more suggestions for eliciting each sound. I'm a parent using this with my 3 year old.

Still too technical

I bought this book thinking it would have some "down to earth" recommendations and suggestions for correcting sounds. It ended up that there was too much narration of how sounds are produced, information that SLPs should already know.

Carl Bistany is the president of the board of SABIS® Educational Systems, INC. and SABIS® Educational Services. These two independent corporations manage schools within the SABIS® Network, which currently serves 70,000 students. For 22 years, he has helped guide the family-owned education business that was set up in 1886 in a village in Lebanon. His efforts have led to the company's expansion, particularly through public-private-partnerships, so that today SABIS® Network schools operate in 16 countries on four continents; 15 SABIS® Network schools with more than 9,000 students are public charter schools in the U.S.

Stephanie Gruner Buckley is an American journalist who has worked on staff at publications including The Wall Street Journal, Inc. magazine and Atlantic Media's Quartz.

Compelling arguments in favor of opening up the educational supply-side in American public schools

Carl Bistany is an outstanding educator, (the book is co-written with journalist Stephanie Buckley). He’s a man with a big heart who I’ve had the privilege of observing over a period of time as he wrestled with the problem of improving educational opportunity in some of the world’s difficult places, including in Iraq, inner-city America and of course his native Lebanon. This book focuses on the American situation; it is his impassioned plea to open up the supply side in American public education, to the greater benefit of underprivileged children.

The argument is compelling: there is a ‘gridlock’ in educational reform in America which leaves many of the most disadvantaged children stuck in failing schools, deprived of the educational opportunities from which they could benefit (Chapter 1). There is a way forward, through charter schools, a route that the evidence shows is beneficial to the most disadvantaged (Chapter 4 highlights this evidence). But politics gets in the way of beneficial reform, with those in power and, especially, the teacher unions, opposed to charter school reform (chapter 5). Moreover, there are ‘hurdles and roadblocks’ against properly opening up the supply side, with many against for-profit providers in particular (Chapter 3); but why in a ‘time of crisis’ would anyone want to ‘limit our options’ and stifle innovation and entrepreneurship in education, especially that which benefits the disadvantaged? (Chapter 2).

Given the ‘many challenges’ that create hurdles to entrepreneurs entering the public school sector in America, ‘you might rightly ask why entrepreneurs bother at all?’ (p. 73). Optimistically, the authors point out that these hurdles can be overcome, at least ‘when the stars are aligned’ (Chapter 7); the final chapter outlines policy recommendations that could make this happen more often (Chapter 9). The tone of the book is optimistic and upbeat throughout, even when some of the stories told have clearly tested the optimism of those involved at the heart of the process. For instance, the opening story is of the SABIS charter school in Springfield, Mass., where the company wanted to take over the worst performing school in the district but was eventually allowed to take over the second worst performer. I’ve been to the school myself: it is now one of the best schools I’ve seen anywhere in the world. It deserves its genuine waiting list of 3,000 students (confirmed each term to check that parents really are still interested). Yet when SABIS applied for another charter in nearby Brockton, Mass, they were turned down – the struggle is reported in Chapter 5 on ‘Politics and power plays’.

The political inhibitions against companies like SABIS trying to operate under such conditions inevitably cripples the supply side and leads to huge levels of unmet demand. For instance, in 2013, ‘charter schools in Illinois received almost 30,000 more applications than they had seats to grant’ (p. 51). In Massachusetts, the supply is so limited by the state cap that there are 45,000 students on charter school waiting lists. Nationwide it is more than 600,000. This is huge untapped demand that those in power are determined to thwart. Even when, as the authors point out, the ‘people most vehemently opposed to school choice rarely have children in failing schools’ (p. 71). Indeed, many have their own children in private schools, or have paid significantly to have their homes in the catchment areas of high quality schools. It is the poor who suffer failing schools. Through writing this book, Bistany seeks to challenge this stark unfairness.

It seems an uphill struggle, and if anyone deserves to win it, it will be people like Bistany. But is it a winnable struggle? Here there is an unanswered question for me. Could a company like SABIS also consider creating ultra low-cost private schools to help meet the frustrated demand on charter school waiting lists? This would be a route that also brings in the ‘T” of the ACT SMART acronym, ‘Turn to the free market’. Yes, energetically pursue the charter school route and succeed where this is feasible. But why not explore this other free market route too? It may also be a good way forward for committed educators like Carl Bistany, who seek improved educational opportunities for all, including those most disadvantaged by the current system.

A Romance reader's digest gone wrong

A fun and romantic read - good thing it was free though. Combining the likes of manga with western romance is best for those already interested in either and the Harlequin Comics Best collection is the true demonstration of romance comics even when poorly presented

The first volume of the Harlequin Comics Best Selection (and every subsequent volume) is essentially a "readers digest" version of upcoming releases of Japanese comics inspired by the western romance authors. There is something for every love-lorn woman and teen girls - beautiful heroines of every social order finding just not just romance, but genuine love with the most handsome and enticing men the female mind can imagine. The artwork is rendered exquisitely, by native manga artists, as as true example of adult oriented comics.

The first issue does highlight some quality control problems. Keeping with the presentation of Japanese comics the reading is reversed and the need to inform oblivious readers is not mentioned at all. Really, this anthology is consists dozens of pages of each of the comics with no supplemental information about the author, artist, story, or release information. The other problem was with a featured story "Keeping Luke's Secret" - in almost every word bubble, the artist/translator could not keep the text within the confines of the word bubble! I have seen better fan translations done for simply for donations. There is no elaborate table of content so the reader will have to flick through several pages to read a particular story.

Manga on the Kindle could have been so incredible but this volume seems rushed. As a heterosexual male, I am a very irregular reader of woman's romance but I am willing to read a good story no matter who the intended audience is. I hope the Harlequin put more thought into their presentation in subsequent issues.

I have seen Harlequin Comics on Amazon, but never have read them. I was not sure about them so I never purchased any of them. Then Harlequin puts out this free sample of book that contains 6 different stories, 315 pages. Some of the stories are connected to one another, as they refer to events that happened in another story. Each sample is just long enough for you to decide if you like the story or not. Each manga is an adaption of a romance novel. Some of the stories drew me in and others did not. This free sample is the best way to decide if you want to purchase the full version or not.

It's a little tricky getting used to the format of the book. I recommend reading through it in advance. I used the book to help develop a plan for 4 days in Paris. There is interesting information in the book, which you have to look for. One example, at the Arch de triumph there is an elevator. When we got to the front of the line and the lady was ushering me into the staircase, I had the information! That alone was worth the price of the book.

There are neighborhood sections and restaurant sections, but it doesn't jump out at you. The maps are absolutely great. I also learned about museum passes and train passes and saved more th n the book cost by using the information. But I wish I had put more effort into the book to reap all the benefits. Maybe next time I am lucky enough to be in Paris.

The best.I have traveled all through Europe for some years and a such read many travel related books. The DK series is outstanding providing up to date information, historical perspectives and relevant pictures of the places most wish to visit and experience. Recommend highly. Off to Paris..again and look forward to the DK series making the walk about more interest.

Not Written by Ex-CIA Agent

First of all, the title is totally deceptive: This book is NOT written by an ex-CIA agent!

The book is written by a guy who--supposedly--was friends with a guy who was in the CIA--a friend who taught him the secrets of how to 'read' people. No credible evidence is offered to support the claim that any such 'CIA friend' even exists.

This was pretty annoying to me, as I happen to be an expert in both verbal and non-verbal communication (I travel the U.S. training individuals and corporations, primarily in persuasive communication). I was genuinely looking for a book by a credible professional that might take my own skill-set to a deeper level. This book was not it.

Potential buyers would be advised to purchase Joe Navarro's 'What Every Body is Saying' instead. Joe was an actual specialist for the FBI and his insights are truly incredible.

I had no clue

I've had a few friends over the years who were able to read people like an open book but I've never really understood how they did it. I thought maybe they were just really empathetic. I mean I knew people used body language to convey things, like girls twisting their hair when they flirt or people crossing their arms over their chest when they're not interested in dealing with you. But I had NO clue just how much we give away with every movement of our hands or even how we position our feet.

Daniel Smith had one such friend, and this guy went on to be in the CIA. Later he came back and taught Daniel how he was able to read people from across the room just by watching them. The information here is twofold. First it will teach you how to get a read on the people around you, which is a huge help whether you're flirting with a cute stranger or watching out for nutters with violent leanings. Secondly it teaches you how to use your own body language not just to project a certain emotion or attitude, but how to use it to make real changes in the way you feel and react. Very awesome! I can especially see how the lessons here could be applied in the workplace to improve both your standing with the boss, and your relationship with your co-workers. I'd recommend this to anyone who ever has to interact with other people, and unless you're living under a rock, that's pretty much everyone.

HEADS UP FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK !!!

Hello world , I just want to say that if you've enjoyed the " Justice League " animated television series and want to learn how to draw your favorite character from the DC Universe then this book should be added to your library collection !!!

However , not to put this book down but I must confess that this book could have added some more things to make it even better , for example : Turnaround Sheets , Character Attitudes , Facial Expressions. The step - by - step drawing examples that are given in this book are very basic at best , all characters in this book get one pose each which you get a five step breakdown on how to draw them.

Oh and here's a great tip for all of you out there , if you’re interested in collecting the entire set of this book series and I do mean :

1. HOW TO DRAW BATMAN AND HIS FRIENDS AND FOES
2. HOW TO DRAW SUPERMAN AND HIS FRIENDS AND FOES

We recently had a tragedy in my family and I lost both my sister and brother-in-law in a boating accident. My great-niece (their granddaughter) lived with them and I became very concerned with how she would handle these sudden deaths. I bought this book because of the reviews and I'm SO GLAD I did!! My great-niece looked at her mom the other day and told her that her invisible string is really long because it reaches MeMe and Paw all the way in heaven. Talk about tears, but such a relief that she knows they are watching her and love her. My fear was that she would think they just left.

Thank you for such a phenomenal book that was interpreted correctly by my smart, beautiful 6 year old great-niece

the story lends itself to deeper conversations about love and interconnectedness

I discovered this book, The Invisible String, when my toddler started having separation anxiety. This book is deeply meaningful and has been an invaluable tool in our home!

As a mother of two young children, I am always looking for books that have relatable characters, carry a strong message and show healthy ways to process feelings. The Invisible String does all of that and more. My three-year-old son loves reading about Liza and Jeremy. He asks me lots of questions about the twins and is curious about each page of the book. Additionally, the story lends itself to deeper conversations about love and interconnectedness. I feel so fortunate to have this book as an anchor for our conversations.

After reading this book, my son and I started wearing an “invisible string” on our wrists, which my son pulls on when he misses me. He has been wearing it for over a year now and it is such a comfort to him. I really recommend this book!
