Grade 10 Up—Cope was a paper delivery boy in California in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. A couple of years later, at 18, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and shipped off to Europe. In 1994, he met cartoonist Guibert and recounted his wartime experiences and what he'd thought of them during the intervening years. The resulting book—published in France a year after Cope's death in 1999—puts readers nearly inside the skin of a young man who learns to deal with Army regulations, a number of Western cultures, friendships, and what turned out to be a lifelong exploration of life's possible meanings. Guibert allows Cope to speak directly from the pages, where the images he is describing unfold in small, neat panels in which grays, black line, and open white space provide details of expression, furnishings, the open countryside, and military equipment. Guibert and Cope are well matched and compelling as storytellers. There is no central dramatic moment here—Cope's major wartime work involved neither attacks nor defenses—but the complete honesty offers insights and answers often omitted in war stories. His chronicle of reporter Didier Lefevre in Afghanistan, The Photographer (in three volumes, so far), won several awards and raised the bar for Guibert’s versatile drawing skills. The unlikely subject of his latest biography is World War II veteran Alan Cope, an American retiree living in France, with whom Guibert developed a close friendship in the early 1990s. Cope’s charismatic demeanor and storytelling penchant gradually put a spell on Guibert, inspiring him to capture Cope’s life in a fascinating tapestry of illustrated anecdotes, reproduced letters, and photographs. Cope, it turns out, saw very little action during his extended European tour in the latter half of the war, yet his peculiar misadventures as a radio operator, tank gunner, and chaplain’s assistant carry their own appeal. His encounters with temperamental officers, friendships with fellow soldiers and German musicians, and struggles to find work in post-war France reveal a fascinating side of wartime life rarely seen in military films or history books. --Carl Hays

This is an interesting memoir in graphic novel style. The pictures have an elegant simplicity. A French author, years after the fact, illustrated the stories of a young American G.I. who happened to arrive in Europe just as WWII was ending. He was a sensitive observer, and made some interesting friendships in that curious post-war period. Imagine touring Europe in a tank!

This is a remarkable book. Guibert's style is immediately engaging -- it sounds corny but it was easy to believe he was speaking directly to me. The art is equally engaging. It supports the story without distracting, and provides a fantastic sense of time and place. They worked together to keep me riveted from cover to cover.

At War with the Army

In an amazing act of cultural sympathy, French cartoonist Emmanuel Guibert befriended the elderly US vert Alan Cope and now proceeds to tell Cope's own story as though Cope was still with us, playing the ventriloquist. Guibert has a finely tuned ear for the enthusiasms and hesitancies of his former friend, and ALAN'S WAR stands as an inspiring tribute to the power of friendship between generations, for you'd have to be awfully sensitive to be able to catch to this degree the nuances of a generation born in the 1920s, not to mention rendering all of Alan's adventures in a complementary, impressionistic panoply of evocative panels. We can almost imagine that Cope wrote this himself!

I heard of this book from my friend, the editor and poet Ben Mazer, who had spread the word that ALAN'S WAR contains a pen-and-ink portrait of our mutual friend, the California writer Landis Everson, one of the original "Berkeley Renaissance" poets of the 1940s. Indeed Landis does appear in some of the brief, postwar sections of the book, when Cope is trying to get his footing back in a society ostensibly at peace, but inwardly seething with the tensions of the Cold War. And it's an interesting take on Landis Everson, but believe me, he plays only a tiny part in this very long saga of war and youth.

Alan Cope himself we get to know well, though there's ultimately a distance he keeps between himself and Guibert. It seems like there's all sorts of things he leaves out. Why for example, his hatred of America? It is said that a companion volume, ALAN'S YOUTH, is to follow, and maybe we'll get some clues about his emotional shutdown. His love of his comrades is a little eye-opening, too, and beyond that Alan seems to have encountered every aggressive gay man in the whole US armed forces. His regret? That he didn't kiss back the brother of a California neighbor who professed his love for him. Other reviewers have noted Alan's tolerance of what were then thought of as sexual deviants. Actually ALAN'S WAR for all it good intentions, and its very real grace, is a little bit boring... But many will love it, and biographers of Pound and henry Miller and Octavio Paz will turn to it for some intrig

David Bean has been trading the financial markets since 1995. He started with stocks but quickly moved on to futures in 1996 and began develop automated trading systems in 1997. Potential purchasers of this book should be aware of what this is and is not. What it is: it is exactly what the title says- 7 gap strategies with the Tradestation ("TS") code for trading the ES (and TF and EMD). What it is not: anything more than that.

It is just 90 pages- but for me, they are packed with value. The charts (showing minute charts of the ES) and the reports (TS performance reports) are very clear. The description of the strategies is clear.

Do they work? I am not very skilled in TS, but I was able to copy the 2 of most interest to me (Gap Fill-1 and Gap Continuation-1), correct my typos, set up the workspaces, deal with a maxbars problem, and get them working. If you knew my minimal coding ability, you would be impressed!

The reports in the book cover the 5 years before June, 2010. I tested the period after. Gap Fill-1 gave a Net Profit per Trade (NPT) of $54 in the 5 year period used by the book; I got just $15 since. Gap Continuation-1 on the TF gave a NPT of $265 in the book. For me since then, it was $202 (both using the TF). I will start auto-trading this, but just watch the Gap Fill-1 system.

If you use TS, this is a great value for the small price. For me, there was a bonus- it helped in my TS coding skills. It also helped to see how the author developed his ideas. I am sure I will take some of these ideas to help develop and improve my own trading.

What if you don't use TS? Well, you won't be able to try modifications, nor will you be able to try different markets. However, you will be able to manually trade the 7 gap strategies. The entry and exit conditions, including stops, are clearly set out. They are not complicated (except in 1 system). You should make up the cost of the book very quickly.

I am a hard marker- this only the second 5 star review I have given. I have given it 5 stars based on solely its value to me. I hope, though, I have given you enough information to evaluate what its value to you would be.

Update on August 16, 2013: I am on the author's Twitter follower list, and found he updated his results here: [...] In summary, the combo system lost $8k in 2011 but is now at all time highs. It has made about $40k over the last 6 years.

Proven and Quantified Strategies

This book has some fantastic strategies which are tradable right of the bat, but the real value is the insight it provides into the process of strategy development. Gap strategies have been well known among traders for a long time, but this is the first book I've come across which outlines a detailed approach to profiting from opening gaps. All too often, trading books advocate strategies which are based on vague chart formations or other untestable methods. The methods in this book are quantified and proven, with a simple approach that can easily be modified to suit your own specific trading goals. Highly recommended.

Some ideas, but low quality

The "book" is actually a long article. It has a formal length of 90 pages, but with big letters and (very) wide spacing. (so, don't worry you can read it without your glasses on).
If you take normal printing as a basis, I would estimate this closer to 30 - 40 pages (the figures from tradestation are, however, normal size, otherwise my estimate would be even lower.

The book presents some system ideas (of the kind you find in many blog posts and discussion groups on the internet). The main benefit of the book is that it details the ideas down to working TS code.
If you are interested in the quality of these ideas, you should download [...]
and check out the Gap fill strategies contained therein. As obviously the strategies are optimized on the range till mid 2010, you should focus your attention on the time since then. As you will see in further forward trading the strategies did not perform extremely well, which is just what someone would expect from (over-)optimized strategies. (Ok, they were also not disastrous, though.)
If I would have seen this beforehand, I would have probably not bought the book in the first place.

The book is written on a level appropriate for someone new to strategy design. But on the other hand, these will probably miss several important background information that is not in the book. For example, the strategy discussion does not take trading cost (or TS-cost) into account. The full benefits that are always given are for 5 years. Both factors help to give very positive results.

Finally, from a "book perspective". Typesetting and binding of the book is fine. Also the color graphics are well reproduced, so it is easy and nice to read. The form of discussion is also very easy to follow. There are spelling and grammar errors (even word repitions), so it does not give the impression that much effort went into proof reading.

Behave, or the Bella will get you!

"This is the story of Bella, who woke up one morning and realized she'd had enough."
This is the beginning of this incredibly well written novel. Dirty Weekend is about revenge. It told the story of Bella, a woman who took justice into her own hands. She'd gone mad, mad I tell you! Seriously, this novel is excruciatingly brutal and surprisingly funny. There is some extreme male-bashing going on in this book, but then again Bret Easton Ellis degraded women in American Psycho. Dirty Weekend is a black comedy that should be read in one sitting. Yeah, it's that good!

Bella is inside us all.

This book is amazing. Read it. Read it twice. Read it a million times. Bella exacts sweet and beautiful revenge on scumbag after scumbag in this delicious black comedy that will have you chanting "BELLA BELLA BELLA" way before you turn the last page. Beautifully and wickedly written. There will be no suicidal jump off the Grand Canyon for Bella, ladies. Just pure and gleeful justice for all those that prey on and hurt women. Bella's had enough, and you'll wish she was your best friend for it.

For the Bella Within Us All........

This is one of my all-time favorite books. It was recommended to me years ago by a British friend, with an arched eyebrow and a knowing look. Once I found it and read it, I knew why.
This book is only for those with a dark sense of humour, and a willingness to look unflinchingly at the underbelly of misogyny and its repurcussions. It is a work of fiction, but oh, how many of us wish we could have our own Dirty Weekends!
What some of the book's detractors may fail to realize is that Bella only metes out justice to those men who assault/invade/abuse her; the predatory neighbor, the wolverine punter in the car park, etc....she never goes looking for trouble; rather, it comes to her and she spits in its ugly face.
To understand this book, you must understand (and, mostly likely, have first hand experience) with the way in which women are constantly deluged with the inappropriate (at best) and predatory (at worst) attentions of unsavory men. By the time most women are 21, they have been subjected to everthing from catcalls, obscene phone calls, being grabbed, being humiliated, and even being raped - with very little public acknowledgement of this subjugation, and continued messages to men that this is acceptable behavior (not rape, of course, but other types of unsolicited attention). The natural result of this is RAGE.
Of course, nice girls do not angry. Nice girls do not raise their voices. Nice girls do not make a fuss. And nice girls certainly do not bludgeon their neighbors with hammers. Except. Bella does. And we stand by and cheer Bella on. Bella, who's had enough.

About the Author

George Beekman is an Honorary Instructor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University. For more than two decades he designed and taught courses in computer literacy, interactive multimedia, computer ethics, and computer programming at OSU. His innovative computer literacy course served as the inspiration for Computer Currents, the first edition of the book that evolved into Digital Planet. George Beekman has taught workshops in computer literacy and multimedia for students, educators, and economically disadvantaged families from the Atlantic to Alaska. He has written many books on computers, information technology, and multimedia, as well as more than 100 articles and reviews for Macworld and other popular publications. George also bikes, hikes, and runs on Oregon trails and roads, produces and plays acoustic and electronic music, shoots and edits photos and videos,  and cultivates community connections on and off line.

 

Ben Beekman is a multimedia designer, writer, and technical consultant based in Portland, Oregon. Ben has developed multimedia Web sites for businesses, nonprofits, artists, and musicians. He has done extensive desktop publishing, page layout, and design for periodicals and one-shot publications. He has written blogs for the Web and technology reviews for print media. He has worked behind-the-scenes on several books, and co-authored the last two editions of this one. Ben also composes, mixes, and remixes music and video, tracks the evolving Internet, consumes comedy, plays disc golf, and enjoys the outdoors with friends and his dog Gizmo.

!!!!Be aware of what you are purchasing!!!!! I just realized the version that says "introductory" in the title is NOT the full text! Who the hell puts a book online under the same name with a one word difference??? This should be clearly spelled out for people that are not aware that you can purchase a full version as well as a short version which apparently has "introductory" in the title. I thought introductory meant introductory to the material. Introductory has 449 pages 10 chapters, and full version has over 656 pages and 15 chapters. Amazon should list all this information. I will be asking for my money back!!

Finally an option book to be proud of

Mr. Walker is clear and concise in his depiction of how the options markets work. He details various strategies and makes options investing understandable to those new to it.
In my 11 years as a futures investor, broker, and author, I have never seen someone with as much grasp of options investing as Mr.Walker and have the capability to explain it.

Yes, As a beginner I can confidently say I know what option is, it's uses and the risk involve. The Author did not only explain the principle but gave practicable example everyone can relate to. All in simple and plain English, you don't need to have been to a school of economy to know what an option is. With the help of this book, I can't look stupid when others uses terminologies relating to option. Keep up the good work Joseph.
