Before there was Titanic the movie or Phantom the musical, one of the great spectacles was the panorama. This art form, popular for a relatively brief period in the 19th century, saw large crowds turn out in cities across Europe and North America to view depictions of battles, great land- and cityscapes, and historic events in, most often, circular purpose-built structures. Many factors, including the cost of the paintings themselves as well as the rise of photography and eventually motion pictures, led to the death of the panorama. French writer Comment, in this excellent history of a mostly forgotten art form, traces the history of the panorama, describes audience reactions, and gives biographical sketches of many of the artists as well as a critical assessment of their work (when possible, as most of the panoramas themselves have been lost). A highlight of the book is the inclusion of the gatefold color illustrations of seven panoramas that give only the slightest hint of what the panorama experience must have been like. A fine complement to Stephan Oettermann's somewhat more academic The Panorama (LJ 1/98), this is an accessible introduction for informed lay readers.

There is no place like Glenalla

Thrown right into the middle of the action, this book hooks you in from the first line. Kree travels to Australia to find her brother who went missing while backpacking. She soon finds her brother and the beauty that is the Outback of NSW. While stepping into her brother shoes while he recuperated to full fill his commitments to a local family; she experience Glenalla first hand. Kree going to Glenalla was no mistake- it was her destiny.

She hatches a plan to save the very town that came to her aid when her brother was in life threatening peril, and along the way discovers her own family’s secrets.

Ewan and Kree’s attraction brews slowly like an electrical storm, building in intensity; but he quickly puts on the breaks as he feels he is unworthy of her.

Ewan is a flawed character who blames himself for his family’s misfortune. He resigns himself to live the bachelor life as a penalty- that is until he meets Kree. They have issues getting off the ground but there was no denying they were in love.

Glenalla was first featured in “Beneath Outback Skies”. Although, I suggest you read that book first, it isn’t necessary- “Down Outback Roads” is a stand alone novel.

Glenalla is such a wonderful setting, full of down home charm and community spirit. Come and fall in love with Alissa Callen’s Glenalla for yourself.

I was really looking forward to Alissa Callen's next book as I adored Beneath Outback Skies.

I was not one bit disappointed with Down Outback Roads, I literally could not put it down.

If you are a fan (addict) of Aussie rural romance, I'm sure that you too will love the story of Ewen and Kree as much as I did.

I really enjoyed this book, for a nice sweet outback Australian Romance, I really was drawn in. The Characters of Kree and Ewan are relatable and beautifully written. The Secondary Characters are just as involved and I would love to see them get their own stories as a continuation.

The most exciting element of this novel is that part of the story was based where I use to live in Dubbo NSW, not the most spectacular place but the first book I have read where I can Imagine the scenes in detail because I have been there.

Kree’s Brother Seth becomes lost in the bush while house sitting a farm while traveling around Australia, Kree becomes involved in the Search where she meets Ewan, who has a dark past and plenty of baggage, after Seth is found safe and well Kree stays on so she can look after the farm while her brother continues traveling. The Sexual Tension between Kree and Ewan is Hot as much as the romance is sweet.

All up Down Outback roads is a great Romance set in outback New South Wales and I would really like to see it continue.

Metheny's MASTERPIECE! in FULL Score - for a song!

I was very happy to learn that the music to Metheny's innovative masterpiece was actually going to be released as a songbook after all, let alone in complete score format! This isn't just another TAB/songbook from Metheny, but the complete score to ALL of the instruments in standard notation (except for the improvised solos). This book really isn't for the casual guitarist (who thinks in terms of licks, solos and TAB) but for the composer/Metheny fan. How I wished I could have looked at this score immediately after I heard him perform this suite in Austin last year (hearing the music for the first time), but to now actually have the COMPLETE score is almost to good to be true!

I won't comment on the content of the music itself since the journey of discovery has really only now just begun for me - now that the score is released. I would like to comment on some things I have read in reviews of this album being a little on the stiff side, since it's not a full live band. To my ears, this music has a VERY good rhythmical feel that Metheny was able to capture with innovative technology. It may not have the feel of a live band BUT artistically, compositionally, and finally, technologically, I think it's important to keep in mind that this is a big creative step and as Pat said himself, "It's really about the music". The music is relatively complex at times which may also come across to some ears as "mechanical" sounding. However, for those who have an ear for creative composition (within the Metheny idiom), this album is a wonderful achievement! My assumption is that the score is based on Metheny's own Sibelius scores (although I don't know that for a fact). What could be better than that!

By the way, some may say that TAB should have been included. That would have taken up too much space and compromised the beautiful layout and price of this score - plus, if you're ready to dive into THIS music, I think it's probably about time to learn how to read actual music notation, if you don't already.

Do yourself a favor, if you like Pat Metheny and you like Orchestrion (and can read music), BUY THIS BOOK! Let me summarize by saying that I haven't spent $14 this well in... well, never!

The style is very similar to The Way Up, however more detail is given.
Still lacks dynamic markings. But chord symbols make up for lack of information.
This is very difficult music to play, good luck with it.

An excellent review of not just Ataturk's biography but the last days of the Ottomans and the nascent years of the Turkish Republic. The work cuts through the legends that have developed around this historical person as he became deified by the nation he created and presents him as a man, with his strenghts and weaknesses. Mango's perspective is clearly Turkophile. Those interested in the history of other ethnic groups like Kurds and especially Armenians will find the book disappointing. References to the events of 1915 are very scant and presented entirely from the Turkish Nationalist perspective. There has not been a good book written by a Westerner about Ataturk since Lord Kinross's classic. Mango's effort, with a more contemporary perspective, and much more detail about day-to-day events is likely to eventually rate in the same category. I would highly recommend this book to anyone deeply interested in the subject.

I never liked science, and now I have a first grader who seems to LOVE it! Perhaps it's because of books like this one! Vividly illustrated with photographs of water, ice, snow, mist, and vapor, it has a very simple text that marvels at the magic of water. There is some explanation (freezing to make ice, heating to make vapor), but not much. Great for an introduction to a beginner reader or young scientist.
