Good story about love

Kate is raising her young brother who is ill after her parents died in a car accident. She's in deep debt over the medical care and calls an old family friend Daire for assistance. He's very rich and trains women for sale as "pets" or companions for a year for a great sum of money. He spent a month training Kate and they develop strong emotions for each other. This book has guilt, jealousy, despair, fear, and the redemption power of love. I would have enjoyed it more if it was fleshed out in greater detail. Some events were rushed and some of the people mentioned were simply named and ignored. But I did enjoy it.

I enjoyed the story and characters. However, if poor editing bothers you this is not the book for you. There was some huge glaring errors and lots of little ones that distracted from the events written on the page.

Excellent within its field

There can't be many people dying to read translations of Taiwanese folktales, but if you're one of them, this book is perfect. If you're not one of them, but have an interest in languages and cultures, you'll find it very worthwhile. As someone who works in Taiwan but doesn't speak Chinese, I feel I understand Taiwanese people a bit better after reading it. Also, I've found the idioms especially useful when designing teaching materials for Taiwanese students.

About the Author
Being a reluctant member of civilised society and reliant on earning an income to feed, clothe and shelter myself, I’ve been forced to try my hand at a few career paths. I’ve cleaned bricks as well as dishes, both poorly. I completed a physiotherapy degree at Sydney Uni, but was unable to work in that capacity for too long. Noone ever told me it involved a hefty dose of touching up old ladies. Sure, they loved it, but I didn’t want to bathe my aching thumbs in ice every night purely for geriatric satisfaction. Around the age of 25 I sniffed out the eternal truth, there’s big money in the money game. There are no rules, brains or ethics, but there’s money…truckloads upon truckloads of easy money. I enrolled in a post grad finance course and lucked into commodities trading, pretending to understand not only what derivatives are, but also how to make money trading the things. I graduated from derivatives to physical oil; slippery, slimy, glorious oil. Slippery is my attempt to open up the world of oil trading and Southeast Asia. Both are hedonistic minefields where a moral compass is your biggest liability and the depravity of the human spirit is rubbed in your face all day, every day.

Hilarious, shocking and damn interesting. Innocent Sydney sports recovery professional becomes flagrant trader bastard and takes the audience on a whirlwind behind the scenes look into what's behind the curtain!

Funny and engaging debut novel.

This is an engaging and at times hilarious page-turner. I found myself at turns disgusted, amused and even faintly aroused by the actions of Flynn. However, you can't help but be blown along with the whirlwind adventures of the protagonist as he leaves behind his physiotherapy career for the heady heights of commodity trading in Asia, all thanks to an ever-so-slightly tenuous CV, a fortuitous phone call and the wherewithal to outwit the other greasy ladder-climbers encountered during the hiring process.

Throughout the hilarious adventures I flip-flopped from wanting to join in the decadent revelry to being happy I remain largely ignorant of many of the people and processes that involve sending money, as well as large quantities of oil and copper concentrates of questionable origin, around the world.

The writing is crisp and the book flies along at a fair pace. If I had one negative thing to say is that the ending felt perhaps a little rushed. But that could just be a side-effect of my disappoint at finishing this otherwise excellent book. That point alone however doesn't stop me giving this book a well-deserved 5 stars. I look forward to more offerings from the author in the future.

This book is an absolute ripper! It feels like a combination of Hunter S Thompson and Anthony Bourdain with a splash of early Marco Pierre White!

Flynn, aka Slippery, aka Liam Carroll is a very naughty boy! His journey through the seamy underworld of global commodities trading is a ribald 'hold onto your seats' rollicking yarn. Enjoy the journey through the seedy, booze filled trading culture in Singapore and Shanghai as Slippery is blooded from naïve apprentice to global trader.

This is laugh out loud funny with a tight, well honed writing style that is very hard to put down.

Still in fine form, old pro Erdman (Zero Coupon, 1993; the nonfiction Tug of War, 1996; etc.) produces another larky fiscal thriller in which the former head of the US Federal Reserve Board finds himself in trouble and on the run. Charles Black, the FRB's recently retired chairman, is jailed in Switzerland on charges of massive securities fraud. On the basis of seemingly irrefutable evidence, the Swiss authorities accuse him of using inside information to engineer a series of market killings that netted in excess of $400 million. But upright Charlie, it turns out, has been framed at the behest of an immensely wealthy Sardinian named Pietro di Cagliari. Using an attractive young woman as bait, the crafty islander has lured Herr Dr. Samuel Schweizer (the ostensibly incorruptible chairman of Switzerland's National Bank) into his high-flying orbit in aid of shady financial ends. In turn, an infatuated Sammy (who needs big bucks to keep his new mistress in the style to which she's accustomed) recruits Hans Zwiebach, a lawyer of easy virtue whose client list includes Charlie. Trading through the latter's dormant Swiss account on tips from Sammy, the duplicitous attorney amasses a considerable fortune that, although in Charlie's name, does nothing to enrich him. When a credible happenstance threatens an investigation, the three create a paper trail that leads to the hapless American. Concerned about loose ends, Pietro (with murder in mind) arranges for Charlie's escape from jail. Before the Sardinian's minions can do their dirty work, though, Charlie, with plucky wife Sally in tow, makes it to a remote Alaskan fishing village. Once in a comfortable lodge equipped with all the modern conveniences, the resourceful exWall Streeter not only fends off would-be assassins but also unravels the transnational plot against him. Paul Erdman's best to date

I love financial thrillers and have read most of Paul Erdman's fiction, but this is by far the best. Not only does he expertly take the reader through the world of derivatives investing and international banking, he paints a picture of Switzerland from Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse to the most remote parts of the Alps that makes you long to get on a plane and go there (and I have been there--it's worth it). The plot moves fast, from the point of view of every character; his knowledge of German, Swiss-German and Italian is impeccable, and the story culminates in an around-the-world chase that keeps you from putting the book down. I can't wait for his next one.

A page turner, difficult to put down.

I really wish Paul Erdman wrote more books. I have enjoyed everyone of his novels. No one of them is better than another, they are all good.
Erdman's novels are centered around investments economics and high finance adventure. To an economist they are especially exciting but I think for most readers they are each an excellent read and The Set-up is no exception. I highly recommend it.

"The Set Up" is pure Erdman!

I was a young GI in Germany in 1969 just learning to appreciate "the Trib." I remember one article that caught my eye: a young American banker working in Basel at the sub of a California bank was arrested for trying to corner the world cocoa market! He failed miserably, and in the process wiped out his employer's equity base. As if the young banker, named Paul Erdman, did not know enough about Switzerland already, he was to learn more, from many months inside a Swiss jail. I next noticed Erdman several years later. He had written a novel, "The Billion-Dollar Sure Thing." I read it and liked it, and later learned that he had begun his novelist's career in that Swiss jail. Erdman's subsequent novels have never disappointed. He is the master of the financial thriller, an unfortunately under-populated genre. "The Set Up," like all of Erdman's fiction, takes place largely in Switzerland. Charles Black, former Chairman of the U.S. Fed, is arrested at the Basel airport as he enters Switzerland. (Erdman reminds us, as he never fails to do, that Basel's airport straddles the Swiss/French border.) He finds himself in the maws of the Swiss power structure, comprised of a hundred or so rich and powerful Swiss men who are, in Erdman's eye, as amoral and as slimy as any in the world. No Swiss Heidi-types here. (Had Erdman been successful in cornering the cocoa market he would have been hailed, not jailed, by this group for furthering the cause of Swiss chocolate!) To divulge any more of the plot would be cheating. Suffice it to say, there is lots of (1)German- Swiss bashing,(2)Deus ex machina that stretches credibility, and (3)untranslated "Schwietzer dooch" and other languages. There is also a woman/mate of the male hero who is sharper than the hero himself. This theme is present in most Erdman novels. Erdman has produced eight novels in a quarter of a century, about one every three years. When I haven't seen one for a while, I start looking in book stores. This year I did something different: I searched for Erdman at amazon.com. Sure enough, he'd written a new book which I ordered immediately. The several days it took to arrive in the mail was an eternity as I anticipated reading a new Erdman. It arrived, and did not disappoint. Erdman remains at the top of his form!

I have been waiting for this book to be written for nearly 40 years. What philosophers and chatty mystics have been trying to model for thousands of years is now finally graspable in terms that readers can easily correlate to and corroborate with their activity as experiencers in the real world. Iain McGilchrist - part psychiatrist, brain scientist, philosopher - aptly points out how the two minds of the right-left brain can simultaneously respect and use properly those innate functions which enable a person to attend to the entirety of the experiential field while navigating its details. He offers data driven critiques of the overweening and corrosive emphasis that modern civilisation has been placing on the left-brain's ex post facto narratives while it short shrifts both the order and predominance of right-brain's initial apprehension of reality in the present moment. As a devoted practitioner of meditative practice, I have found it far easier to map the course of "The Way" on McGilchrist's neurophysiological terrain of consciousness, than upon the many archaic - albeit astoundingly useful - models of the old schools with all their magic dragons.

Excellent summary of divided brain research

This is basically a brief, summary version of the author's excellent longer book, The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World. The longer work is well-written, extremely interesting, goes into detail, and is definitely worth reading. But for those who want a shorter presentation of the results and implications of divided brain research -- how human beings have a left-brain and a right-brain, and how the difference (and sometimes conflict) between them accounts for many important aspects of our experience and culture, then this shorter work is very good. It covers all the main points of the longer work and is a genuine bargain. I would recommend this shorter work for all psychologists and philosophers, or anyone with a strong interest in either field. (And I would recommend the longer work also for people with a special interest in this important topic.)

Superb writing from a knowledgeable observer with years of clinical observations backing his conclusions. I've always had trouble with the some of the left-brain / right-brain distinctions, but McGilchrist makes a simplification that I can remember and believe in. He characterizes the left hemisphere as driven to come up with a consistent narrative about the world which brooks no ambiguity or uncertainty whereas the right hemisphere is fine with paradox, emotional shading and mystery. Profound insight into phenomenology with some implications for culture.

Excellent research at that time but....

...but outdated at present. Remember this was published in 1991 before the expansion and domination of the internet even email. I gave it a 5 star because of the extensive research done by the authors in that period. I am sure they must be working on a late Mac windows word processor so the format of the book is much like an MLA style research paper. All in black and white no colors. Matt Hargreaves one of the authors is a nice person to correspond with. He would send you responses by mail very personalized and have helped me in acquiring some of my Tangerine Dream CDs by mail order. Now the Voices in the Net website continuous the legacy of this book with more current and updated information on Tangerine dream. At 464 pages it covers all TD's output until 1991. Most of the information here were taken from the individual albums. Each album details the release format and origin. However it does not show the picture on every release. The best part is an essay on bootlegged TD. The lack of pictures is a let down but this is like a travel guide book in buying TD albums in different format and releases. At its release this was priced at 30 dollars and now at less than 15 is a good purchase. If you are a collector of TD particularly literature which is not too many then this is for you. But if you expect a glossy page book full of photos, colorful pictures,memorabilia and a lot of reading, gossips, stories, biography, private life of the band, then you might be disappointed. Again the information here ends in 1991 so Voices in the Net picks up what it lefts. If you purchase this at over $15 it's a bit pricey and not worth it.

To add to this very hard to find book, I have the Limited Edition Hardcover version. Orange Cloth bound. , and signed by Sonnnemann, Stoeferle, and Hargreaves. Limited to only 100 copies! good luck finding this one again! Even though the information isnt as up to date as the website is,since it came out in 1990, this is a true collectors must have. hit me up on adamkravitz72@gmail.com if interested.

Wondering how to help your high school student find focus and direction where college is concerned? Have Fun & Get it Done is a book every high-school and college student should read (as well as every parent of a high-school or college student). We recommend this book early (during high-school) as a goal setting and planning tool, and then again during college as a resource guide and as a refresher. The best time to get this book for your student is now. But it's never too late to read Dana's book about planning for and achieving one's goals.

Have Fun & Get it Done is an exceptional book which is highly deserving of praise. Author Jenee Dana (who graduated from UCLA in 3 years) exhibits incredible insight and wisdom, and presents valuable points in a way that is down-to-earth, entertaining and inspiring. Success-aid tips and and planning and goal setting resources are only a part of what makes this book an exceptional read. - This book is written by a recent student, for students. Her whimsical spin and witty personality reads loud and clear through a straight-forward message that will resonate with students in a powerful and meaningful way.

Dana realizes that college is not a one-size-fits all program. Her book is tailored to help students gain insight into their own personal wants and needs through honest and straight-forward introspection.

I never leave reviews but.....

So, I never leave reviews. EVER. But I felt I had to this time. We have a daughter getting ready to go off to college in the fall and reading this book is helping us realize that we can save an ENTIRE YEARS TUITION! OK, so that would be best case, but the ideas and lessons here, I'm sure, will help her not get carried away with what MTV tell our kids what college is "supposed" to be. This is the kind of info that all inbound college kids need!!

I love this book! I love the style, the selection of topics and the choice of problems to illustrate the ideas discussed. The topics are typical contest problem topics: divisors, absolute value, radical expressions, Veita’s Theorem, squares, divisibility, lots of geometry, and some trigonometry. And the problems are delicious.

Although the book is intended for high school students aiming to do well in national and state math contests like the American Mathematics Competitions, the problems are accessible to very strong middle school students.

The book is well-suited for the teacher-coach interested in sets of problems on a given topic. Each section begins with several substantial solved examples followed by a varied list of problems ranging from easily accessible to very challenging. Solutions are provided for all the problems. In many cases, several solutions are provided.

great book for math competition

Enjoyable problems and splendid solutions! I got these four books and I'm working the first volume right now. The layout of the book is very clean and I like how the notes, examples, and problems go so well together and with the real problems on the AMCs competitions. The solutions are very cleverly explained and clear; easy to read and understand. I highly recommend these four books to start off and lead you to your very successful AMC score( when you finish these books).

Great math competition book

The authors really understand what students need for math competitions. These 4 books are great outline in virtually all important parts of competition math, with reasonably challenging examples and problems. It's very useful for preparing competitions. It's also great to quickly "boost" a few knowledge points for younger but very talented students so that that they can participate higher level competitions which beyond their grades.

This book on more advanced topics is at the same high level as the previous volumes. Many of the topics here are not as clearly presented anywhere else. Highly recommended for Math Clubs and high level students.
