Very Disappointing

Sad to say, I found this book very disappointing. There is really nothing new or noteworthy here, just a lot of fatherly advice and thin examples. A professional writing a book with this title would reference research, include citations, explain new ideas in depth, or at the very least include an index. None of these are present in this book.

There is a promise on the front flap to "redefine what it means to be a true professional." I never found this new definition. I certainly can find plenty of books on excellence and expertise and integrity that inspire and teach and define much better than "we follow the rules. Where rules do not exist, we use fair judgment. When in doubt, we do not go ahead and do what suits us; we seek counsel. Finally, faced with a difficult choice, we ask ourselves: Can my act stand public scrutiny without causing embarrassment to me and my family" (p. 24). Gee, thanks Dad. This is not exactly groundbreaking stuff -- and there is no discussion of how to actually learn and execute excellence in everyday operations.

This is an important subject. I just don't think this book is going to help many people on a journey to excellence. I hope that as you relentlessly chase perfection, you will catch excellence (a Vince Lombardi phrase), and I hope you find this review useful.

Tidy parables make for decent light reading

Concepts of professionalism which we all know but may sometimes have trouble articulating are neatly embodied by the stories the author has gathered from his own experience.

The chapters of this book are broken into short 3-5 page stories that Bagchi uses to illustrate aspects of professionalism. I've enjoyed reading one or two at a time, taking them as food for thought and inspiration for striving to improve. One of the things I've noticed in the upper echelons of grad school is that tunnel vision and burn-out are pretty common, so it's always a pleasure to find a book that has the potential to rekindle enthusiasm for sticking to deadlines and putting full effort into work every day.

It's not really a groundbreaking boook, as advice like this circulates all the time, but it does a nice job of framing it for the present and lending some perspective to what underlies standards of professionalism.

Technically Lacking

The book doesn't deliver on presenting a computer application system for evaluating performance. It takes the CCRC's accredition questions and just expands on them. From the information that was presented I not sure if the authors know what an application system is. In any event the book lacks any hard technical information, or performance standards, that can be used for evaluating and designing a project. It's presentation is more like a general business plan from a recent MBA graduate.

Underway in this country is a monumental effort to transform healthcare, driven by the need to reduce waste, redundancy, and danger . What Dr. Volandes brings to the table is visibility into the lives of those who struggle to find their way through this complicated, confusing, and intimidating medical industrial complex and reveals the simple yet profound notion that we can take back control of what happens to us. What is astounding is that to take control we must start with the simple act of conversation. When we, as healthcare providers, caregivers, family members and loved ones can lovingly and courageously discuss what is most important to a person at the end of life, we can support and honor that person. We can ensure that he or she is treated in a manner consistent with what defines them; in short, we can change the world. This book puts us on that path.

Compelling, Required Reading

The Conversation serves as fascinating introduction to the life and work of Harvard Medical School physician researcher Angelo Volandes. As other reviewers have noted, the book is equal parts physician-patient narrative and how-to book in what it means to navigate life's final chapter. There are additional themes in the book of importance: the full circle of a father-son relationship, the complex interface between technology and human values, and how an aging population will touch us all in some way.

The writing is a superb combination of storytelling and practical advice. The stories- the professor and his wife, the poetry teacher, the young woman with breast cancer, the coal miner- conclude with Volandes' challenges in navigating The Conversation with his own father. You read about these lives spellbound and wanting more. Maybe it is because these characters are so real, we naturally start to think about what we would want in similar circumstances. Volandes walks with us on this journey with the final sections of the book offering real world advice for individuals and families. It is an incredible reading experience to start with these stories and end up at our own lives.

I heard Volandes interviewed on public radio recently and he distilled his message into what matters most: The Conversation is not about dying but living. It's about knowing what we want (and what our loved ones want) so we can live a better life in the face of whatever might happen in the future. At the heart of the book is an optimistic message, one that Volandes clearly believes in enough to dedicate his career to advancing. I cannot recommend The Conversation enough as a compelling novel and a start in clarifying some of the most important decisions we will ever make.

I'm so glad Angelo has written this book

I received my copy of The Conversation yesterday, and read the whole thing, cover-to-cover. Angelo's book is so important; everyone must read it. We will all face end-of-life issues sometime in our lifetime, and it could be sooner than we think. As someone who has been dealing with terminal lung cancer for over 6 years, I should have already had The Conversation, but I have put it off. No longer! Angelo has given me the courage and the information I need to talk to my sons - and doctors - about this very difficult topic.
I waited too long to have The Conversation with my mother; she's still alive at 94, but has severe dementia. As her health care proxy, I only hope I will make the right decisions for her in the end, which will be soon. She has only said she wants DNR. Angelo makes it clear that we need much more specific, personal information.
I'm so glad Angelo has written this book. I am going to gift it to many of my friends and family.

About the Author
Leslie Knope has lived in Pawnee since her childhood. The community programs she enjoyed in her youth inspired her to pursue a life of public service and serve the city. Leslie is a member of several action committees in her role at city hall, including the Equal Opportunity Committee, the Fun in the Sun Committee, the Clean Restroom Task Force, the Handicapped Restroom Task Force and the Task Force to Reduce the Number of Public Restrooms.Her goal is to become the first female President of the United States. Leslie is the Deputy Parks Director of Pawnee's parks and recreation department, a mid-level bureaucrat position. She hopes to advance her career (possibly aiming to jump over the department's Director position and become a City Manager) and improve her town. Leslie also has a love for sweets, especially whipped cream, as she usually adds excessively large amounts to coffee, waffles and other food.

Enough of this "Gotcha" journalism! So what if the author wasn't born in Pawnee? I've always felt that it's where you're from that counts, not where you were born. Sure, Ms. Knope may have been born in that awful Eagleton, but she's definitely from Pawnee.

It had me crying with laughter in the first page!

Pre ordered it as soon as I could. This book is a must own for any parks and recreation fan. They put so much thought into every description often with multiple layers of jokes for each item. Seriously, can not recommend it any more highly. One note, read it a couple pages at a time and savor it, I blew through too many pages the first day I got it!

FANTASTIC!

The second I opened this book I burst out laughing and never stopped smiling. As a fan of this show, I was able to read every section with each characters voice and expression in mind. This is a super fun read and so thorough! I definitely recommend it, even for non-fans of the show because its hysterically written. This was a no-regrets purchase for sure! PARKS AND RECREATION FANS MUST BUY THIS!! If you don't then I'm telling Ron Swanson.
