About the Author
R. Jon McGee is a professor of Anthropology at Southwest Texas State University. He began his work with the Lacandon Maya of Mexico in 1980, and received his Ph.D. from Rice University in 1983. McGee is married, has a son and daughter, and has taught at Southwest Texas State since 1985. He is the author of numerous works on the Lacandon including Life, Ritual and Religion Among the Lacandon Maya, and Watching Lacandon Maya Lives. He is also the coauthor of the texts Anthropological Theory: An Introductory History and Many Worlds: Essays in Religious Practices, Beliefs, and Culture. Richard L. Warms is professor of anthropology at Southwest Texas State University. He has done original fieldwork in West Africa, has published numerous scholarly articles and is co-author, with Jon McGee, of Anthropological Theory: An Introductory History and with Serena Nanda of Cultural Anthropology, 7th edition.

extremely useful text

I used this text for an upper division undergraduate course in social theory. In general, I found the selection of articles to be wise and helpful; I didn't use all of them but used more than I would from any other compilation. The book doesn't adequately cover the recent period, but no text could, and the teacher should choose her own supplements to the core texts found herein. Unlike the first reviewer, my students and I found the extensive footnotes to be the book's most valuable resource. They kept the students' attention, contextualized obscure references, and clearly explained more challenging passages. I did not find that these footnotes interfered with the role of the teacher; instead, they freed the class to spend more time in fruitful interrogation of the authors' ideas and less time buried in minutae. I highly recommend this book for teachers of upperdivision theory courses, and for graduate students looking for an unfair advantage on their rivals as they take their core courses.

Good collection of readings

This book contains works by most of the classic anthropological theorists. And very importantly, it contains footnotes, which are very helpful. However, it contains few current readings. Also, this edition of the book removes some of the better, more current selections from the older edition. If you are looking for a solid anthropological reader, then you can't go wrong with this text, BUT...try and get the earlier edition if you can.

Decent beginning, but still flawed.

I used this text for an anthropological theories course in undergraduate work. It's a pretty decent collection of work from major figures in anthropology.

Spencer, Tylor, and Morgan, Levi-Strauss, Marx, Boas, etc, etc. There is also a lot of work done to try and tie a common thread through as much material as possible. Contextualization of how a theory came to be, and what it might imply are pretty well done. Chances are, you're buying this book for a class, rather than pleasure, and though this can be kind of dry, it's fairly well done. Some selections are puzzling in terms of what they illustrate for that author, but by and large it shouldn't kill you to read this book.

There are footnotes, too. These seem like a blessing to begin with, especially if you don't have much of a foothold in the material, there is a lot that you are caught up on quickly, and it can be very helpful. On the flipside, the editors can be very heavy-handed in guiding the reading, and can be sometimes inane in their commentary. This is the major failing of the book, it's more to read, and the later in the book you get, the less useful it is.

For fans of teen and tween fiction, Mermaid's Chest follows a half dozen girls who stumble across a hidden treasure chest. Thinking it to be a pirate's chest, they excitedly open it and each find that they are drawn to take a bracelet. When the magic of the moment wears off, they return home and find in a series of accidents that they have all been cursed by the bracelets to turn into mermaids when they get wet on their legs and torsoes.
As they argue with each other over many things, they all come to the conclusion that they need to hide the secret from everyone, even their families.
The several days finds the girls sneaking off to test their new mermaid forms and they find out that they can do more than just swim. As new powers show themselves, the girls keep trying to figure out the secrets of the island and its treasure chest while a new romance reveals itself to Phoebe in Steve, a boy that they met at the beach only a few days ago.
Steve and his friends throw a party just to get to see the girls again, especially Phoebe that he is very attracted to. A pool, hot tub and a water balloon fight keep the girls on their toes and a little on edge even as they try and take a break from being mermaids.
A few weeks pass when a circus comes to town. Thinking that they might actually find someone that could know about mermaids in the freak show of the circus, the girls all run off to see it only to find out that they aren't the only ones looking to find answers to mermaids. Their occassional slip ups lead to news stories and internet buzz, and brings a creature hunter, who has a dark motive for finding the mermaids.

Entertaining, But Lacking

There are many similarities to a popular Australian show, H2O: Just Add Water. That's not necessarily a problem in of itself, but there are times when it feels more like fanfiction rather than an original story. They both have a ten second delay after touching water before they become mermaids. Although the cause is somewhat different (bracelets vs being in the moon pool on a full moon), both sources originate from a cave on an island. Even the main character is more or less a clone of Cleo Sertori from the show, who, coincidentally, is named Phoebe and comes from Australia...likely named for Phoebe Tonkin, who played Cleo on the show. Even Katie and Emily feel like American counterparts to Rikki and Emma from the TV show, with similar personalities and appearances.

It's not completely similar of course, but there are enough there that it would be a disservice to ignore them.

Taylor, Faith, and Brook are the three other mermaids of the story, and they felt like original additions...but they were slightly problematic ones.

There are just too many characters. You have the six girls who turn into mermaids, the brother and his friend, the guys that they run into at the party, and Emily and Faith's parents. Not all of them get a lot to do, either. Taylor, for instance, felt as though she was hardly in the story. Brook hardly got to do much. Faith was a fun addition and had personality, but it felt as though she could've been used more. She had a strong rivalry with her sister Emily that never really paid off.

I think the story would've been better served if it had cut down on the characters. Taylor adds absolutely nothing to the overall plot of the story and doesn't feel like an important character even when she's up front and center. Brook plays second fiddle to Faith and doesn't really have much of a personality of her own. At the very least, they should've have been mermaids, because trying to keep the secret from them for a time would've added some fun tension and hi-jinx into the mix and given them something to do. The guys from the beach didn't really add much either, even during the party scenes. They didn't even factor at all into the ending.

Focusing more on the rivalry between Emily and Faith could've added some much needed tension to the middle parts of the book as well. Nothing really came of it, and it felt like wasted potential, especially given the age difference. Faith almost could've been somewhat of an antagonist, a risk to their secret because she's reckless and arrogant about it all.

The other problem is the villain. They don't really show up much until the very end, and the plot is resolved very easily once it comes to a head. There isn't really much explanation there on why they're doing what they do. There's also not much explanation on how the bracelets work or why they work a certain way towards the end either - especially in Phoebe's case, where a last minute event seems more like a huge plot convenience than a plot twist.

Overall, it's a lengthy story that feels incomplete, with too many points of views and characters. If the story focused more and tightened up the plot, with clearer explanations, I think it would've been a much better story.

It feels set up for a sequel, though I'm not sure if one is coming. I would like to see one eventually, despite my problems with the book.
