Where I used to live during childhood years...

When my parents decided to leave New York, we lived in Daly City from 1959-1971. My late aunt had purchased a home there (near Westlake)and told my father we should move there too. Many of the people listed in the book were friends of our family, and their children were classmates of mine. I attended Westmoor High (where the cabbage fields were) and miss the place since we moved from there in early 1971. I remember John Daly Bl. as Alemany Bl., with much of the area basically brand new when we were there, mainly the Westlake area.

The Serra Theater brought back memories after having gone there many weekends with friends for the movies. Westlake was the big shopping center, complete with bowling alleys, restaurants, lots of neat shops.

Thanks for the great memories, I am sorry we left the area too soon for all the family friends to be remembered for the groups they belonged to.

which had the best oranges in town

I feel there was much missing from this book! I grew up in the heart of Daly City and there wasn't a mention of Serra Theatre. How about Sierra Bowel? Heck, when I was a kid, my friends and I use to slip in there and the smell of smoke and liquor was enough to have you walk out intoxicated.. No mention of the produce market on Hillside Blvd, which had the best oranges in town! What about Toto's Pizza, remember! The thick crust and the best cheese, was to die for! How about the cemeteries? Ok, maybe they are in Colma, but that is a mention in itself. You don't mention the scandals at the Mission Bell Hotel; notorious! There is a lot more to Daly City than the top of the hill!

It's okay, not great.

I got this because I thought it would have a broader approach than another publication I have. Turns out this one, like the other, skipped over some of the things I was looking for. I could have gone without it, but it adds to my library of places I've lived.

About the Author
Kelly Shea Welch teaches in the School of Family Studies and Human Services at Kansas State University.  A native of Kansas, she received her Ph.D. in Family Studies at Kansas State University after working for many years as a doula, a professional birth attendant who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to the childbearing woman and her partner.  Still today her research interests marry women’s health issues with family studies.  Over the past 10 years, she has taught the large, introductory human growth and development course which enrolls a little more than 1,000 students per semester.  The author of the interactive learning CD Roms, Development: Journey of a Lifetime, and Development: Journey through Childhood and Adolescence, she recognizes and emphasizes the value of active and learner-centered pedagogy that allows students to organize, integrate, and generate knowledge.  In addition to teaching the human growth and development course, she also teaches the Family Relationships class that enrolls approximately 300 students each semester.  She is a recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Presidential Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching, and nominations for the United States Professor of the Year and the United States Distance Educator of the Year.  These teaching awards and nominations recognize her distinct, innovative, and energetic teaching style—students consistently indicate that this unique teaching style puts them “on the edge” of their seats and holds their attention.

I really like this textbook and think you will too!

I have used both the earlier edition and this one in my classes for several years and students really like the book. The text covers a lot of ground and excels at presenting sophisticated ideas in a way that my students can understand them. It also incorporates topics of interest to a wide variety of students and speaks to a range of topics and are that appeal to my diverse student body.

I am very displeased because this EXPENSIVE textbook didn't even come with the access code to do my homework. Now I've got to shell out $85 more on top of the cost of this book, the description needs to be more specific.
