Waste of money
By Gregory A. Stobbs
This is not a book. It is just a collection of terse, and I mean terse, notes. There is not even a single paragraph of text. Nothing to read. What a disappointment.

This is the Bible
By Muzaffer Muctehitzade
Now the theory is behind you and you are into Physical exams and History taking and diagnostics. This book is a must for you. In 397 Chapters it tells you about almost all human illnesses. Each chapter starts with theory (physiology), History taking, continues with Diagnosis and Treatment, it even tell you how to approach the patient what to look and what to disregard. Almost 2600 pages, takes two to carry, requires own stand in your home like Webster's dictionary but have more information compared to other 2600 page books due to fine print and unfortunately very minimal pictures or diagrams. You might want to get complete with pocket book edition for handiness when you need it. This book will not help in your diagnosis but when you think you had diagnosed than you can refer to this to see to confirm or rethink.

Earliest Old Testament Translations Volume 1, by Clayton G Porter

Earliest Old Testament Translations Volume 1 is a comparison of 6 of the most important of the reformation and pre-reformation translations of the Old Testament Pentateuch into English. All of the original wording has been retained for accuracy and authenticity, but the big stumbling block of spelling has been eliminated. All of the spelling has been updated to modern standards so that the reader can concentrate on the meaning of the scripture as these early devoted translators translated it instead of stumbling over the wayward spelling.
The preface to Earliest Old Testament Translations Volume 1 begins with a short introduction explaining why these early Old Testament translations are still important today, and continues with a brief chronology of the significant milestones in the evolution of the Bible in the English language. Following this are short discussions of the importance and development of the translations selected for this comparison study.

Earliest Old Testament Translations Volume 1 continues with each of the first five books of the Old Testament presented with a brief, one sentence summary of the content. Chapters in the earlier translations are broken into verses to match the King James and each verse is presented in 6 parallel translations.

Chosen for this comparison study were:

1. The Old Testament Pentateuch from the third century B.C. Greek Septuagint as translated into English in 1851. The Greek Septuagint is the earliest known translation of the Hebrew scriptures into any other language.

2. The Old Testament Pentateuch from the John Wycliffe Bible of 1395. This was the first complete Bible ever translated into the English language. It was translated from St. Jerome’s early fifth century Latin Vulgate and was the foundation for the later reformation.

3. The Old Testament Pentateuch from the Douay Old Testament as revised by Bishop Richard Challoner in 1763. The Douay Old Testament first completed in 1610 and it’s subsequent revisions have remained the Old Testament for Catholic bibles to this day. This as well was a translation of St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate.

4. The William Tyndale Pentateuch of 1530. This was the first translation of any portion of the Old Testament into the English language directly from the Hebrew Masoretic text.

5. The Old Testament Pentateuch from the Geneva Bible of 1560. This was the first Bible to break the chapters into individual numbered verses and was the first Bible brought to this country by the pilgrims. It remained the most popular Bible in England for over 100 years after the introduction of the King James.

6. The Old Testament Pentateuch from the King James Version of 1611. No comparison of Bible translations would be complete without including the venerable King James Version.

Reasons to Believe
By Syd Dithers
I read this book in the hardback edition when it was called FACING DEATH (AND THE LIFE AFTER), and all these years later, I still myself talking about it.

Around that time, I attended a wedding where a member of the bride's family died of a heart attack at the reception (it was as bad as it sounds, believe me). But he didn't die right away. And he spoke before he was gone. It was obvious by what he said and how he said it that he was telling us what he could see: what lies ahead.

Billy Graham, a man who has presided over many deathbeds in his long career as a preacher, writes of his experiences at such moments. And it was stunning to me to read of the similarities.

I've read several of Dr. Graham's book and I've been struck at the depth and complexity of his writings. As an evangelist, he keeps his messages simple and straightforward, but as a writer, he can delve into his subjects more deeply and more thoughtfully.

It's a great book that gives you so much to think about.

And find comfort in.

An important book for all Christians to read
By Amazon Customer
This book is not about the hereafter in the sense that it doesn't go into extreme detail as to what life will be like in the hereafter and then from there, to the New Heavens and the New Earth. For that sort of details account and examination, always within a literal Biblical point of view, I would suggest Alcorn's Heaven. This book, another masterfully explored book by Billy Graham, focuses on the here and now in such a way as to examining out outlook toward that day when we die (or even better, thank the Lord, when He comes and Raptures the church). What does it mean in this, now, 21st century to live and to die? What are we to make of the culture of death that we see in the media and across the United States--from the tragedy of the late Ms. Shiavo to abortion on demand and on to euthanasia for our elderly for any old cause or reason? Basically such deaths come about because they are convenient, not based on literal Christian point of view toward the meaning of life and the dignity of dying and death. Graham asks and uses the Bible to answer questions such as "what does it mean to die as a Christian" verses "what does it mean to die without hope" (i.e. without Jesus Christ in your life as your Savior and King). For those who are dying with Jesus as the Savior, as examined by Graham, there is peace even if the death is in the face of persecution by those who do not see the light. For those who are dying without, well, there is only a slow decline into darkness, as Graham explains using the truth of the Bible. Thus, Mr. Graham is not afraid to ask questions nor is he afraid to look for answers through the written words of the Lord and through those He has touched through the ages to be His messengers, great and small. I would suggest anyone to take this book and seriously read it, examine what it has to say about death, dying, and eternity...work it into reading such books as Deadline and Heaven by Randy Alcorn...and really then falling on your hands and knees for a true talk with the Lord. Here and now you need to understand the eternal truths of living and dying and eternity. Graham points the way for the reader to go on and to use the Bible so that it shows the reader the foundations of truth and of forever.

Lone Star Winter: The Winter Soldier\Cattleman's Pride (Long, Tall Texans), by Diana Palmer

Two classic love stories in a keepsake edition that will heat up your winter!

The Winter Soldier

Everyone in Jacobsville, Texas, steered clear of taciturn Cy Parks—everyone but the spirited Lisa Monroe, who electrified the formidable loner with her tantalizing kisses. Their fiery passion escalated when the soldier returned from the line of duty—and claimed Lisa as his bride, to shield her from a revenge-seeking desperado. Clearly Cy was getting mighty possessive of this enchanting woman who needed the type of safeguarding only he could provide. But who would protect the beguiling bride from him…?

Cattleman's Pride

He was strong, seductive and set in his ways. She was shy, unassuming and achingly innocent. Yet when Jordan made it his personal crusade to help Libby hold on to her beloved homestead, everyone in Jacobsville knew it was just a matter of time before wedding bells chimed. But a cattleman's pride was a force to be reckoned with. Could Libby accomplish what no woman had before and tame this Long, Tall Texan's restless heart?

It was Monday, the worst day in the world to try to get a prescription filled. Behind the counter, the poor harassed male druggist was trying to field the telephone calls, fill prescriptions, answer questions from patrons and delegate duties to two assistants. It was always like this after the weekend, Cy Parks thought with resignation. Nobody wanted to bother the doctor on his days off, so they all waited until Monday to present their various complaints. Hence the rush on the Jacobsville Pharmacy. Michael, the pharmacist on duty, was smiling pleasantly despite the crush of customers, accustomed to the Monday madness.

That group putting off a visit to the doctor until Monday included himself, Cy mused. His arm was throbbing from an encounter with one of his angry Santa Gertru disbulls late on Friday afternoon. It was his left arm, too, the one that had been burned in the house fire back in Wyoming. The angry rip needed ten stitches, and Dr. "Copper" Coltrain had been irritated that Cy hadn't gone to the emergency room instead of letting it wait two days and risking gangrene. The sarcasm just washed right off; Coltrain could have saved his breath. Over the years, there had been so many wounds that Cy hardly felt pain anymore. With his shirt off, those wounds had been apparent to Coltrain, who wondered aloud where so many bullet wounds came from. Cy had simply looked at him, with those deep green eyes that could be as cold as Arctic air. Coltrain had given up.

Stitches in place, Coltrain had scribbled a prescription for a strong antibiotic and a painkiller and sent him on his way. Cy had given the prescription to the clerk ten minutes ago. He glanced around him at the prescription counter and thought he probably should have packed lunch and brought it with him.

He shifted from one booted foot to the other with noticeable impatience, his glittery green eyes sweeping the customers nearest the counter. They settled on a serene blond-haired woman studying him with evident amusement. He knew her. Most people in Jacobsville, Texas, did. She was Lisa Taylor Monroe. Her husband, Walt Monroe, an undercover narcotics officer with a federal agency, had recently been killed. He'd borrowed on his insurance policy, so there had been just enough money to bury him. At least Lisa had her small ranch, a legacy from her late father.

Cy's keen eyes studied her openly. She was sweet, but she'd never win any beauty contests. Her dark blond hair was always in a bun and she never put on makeup. She wore glasses over her brown eyes, plastic-framed ones, and her usual garb was jeans and a T-shirt when she was working around the ranch. Walt Monroe had loved the ranch, and during his infrequent visits home, he'd set out improving it. His ambitions had all but bankrupted it, so that Lisa was left after his death with a small savings account that probably wouldn't even pay the interest on the loans Walt had obtained.

Cy knew something about Lisa Monroe because she was his closest neighbor, along with Luke Craig, a rancher who was recently married to a public defender named Belinda Jessup. Mrs. Monroe there liked Charolais, he recalled. He wasn't any too fond of foreign cattle, having a purebred herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle, breeding bulls, which made him a profitable living. Almost as prosperous as his former sideline, he mused.

A good champion bull could pull upward of a million dollars on the market.

Lisa had no such livestock. Her Charolais cattle were steers, beef stock. She sold off her steer crop every fall, but it wouldn't do her much good now. She was too deeply in debt. Like most other people, he felt sorry for her. It was common gossip that she was pregnant, be cause in a small town like Jacobsville, everybody knew everything. She didn't look pregnant, but he'd over heard someone say that they could tell in days now, rather than the weeks such tests had once required. She must be just barely pregnant, he mused, because those tight jeans outlined a flat stomach and a figure that most women would covet.

But her situation was precarious. Pregnant, widowed and deeply in debt, she was likely to find herself homeless before much longer, when the bank was forced to foreclose on the property. Damned shame, he thought, when it had such potential for development.

She was clutching a boxed heating pad to her chest, waiting her turn in line at the second cash register at the pharmacy counter.

When Lisa was finally at the head of the line, she put down her heating pad on the counter and opened her purse.

"Another one, Lisa?" the young female clerk asked her with an odd smile.

She gave the other woman an irritated glance as she dug in her purse for her checkbook. "Don't you start, Bonnie," she muttered.

"How can I help it?" the clerk chuckled. "That's the third one this month. In fact, that's the last one we have in stock."

"I know that. You'd better order some more."

"You really need to do something about that dog," Bonnie suggested firmly.

"Hear, hear!" the other clerk, Joanne, seconded, peering at Lisa over her glasses.

"The puppy takes after his father," Lisa said defensively. He did, she mused. His father belonged to Tom Walker, and the mostly German shepherd dog, Moose, was a local legend. This pup was from the first litter he'd sired—without Tom's knowledge or permission. "But he's going to be a lot of protection, so I guess it's a trade-off. How much is this?"

Bonnie told her, waited while she wrote the check, accepted it and processed it. "Here you go," she told the customer. She glanced down at the other woman's flat stomach. "When are you due?"

"Eight months and two weeks," Lisa said quietly, wincing as she recalled that her husband, away from home and working undercover, had been killed the very night after she'd conceived, if Dr. Lou Coltrain had his numbers right. And when had Lou ever missed a due date? He was uncanny at predicting births.

"You've got that Mason man helping you with the ranch." Bonnie interrupted her thoughts. "You shouldn't need a dog with him there. Can't he protect you?"

"He only comes on the weekends," Lisa replied.

Bonnie frowned. "Luke Craig sent him out there, didn't he? But he said the man was supposed to spend every night in the bunkhouse!"

"He visits his girlfriend most nights," Lisa said irritably. "And better her than me! He doesn't bathe!"

Bonnie burst out laughing. "Well, there's one bright side to it. If he isn't staying nights, you only have to pay him for the weekends…Lisa," she added when she saw the guilty expression on the other woman's face, "you aren't still paying him for the whole week?"

Lisa flushed. "Don't," she said huskily.

"Sorry." Bonnie handed her a receipt. "It's just I hate the way you let people take advantage of you, that's all. There are so many rotten people in the world, and you're a walking, talking benevolence society."

"Rotten people aren't born, they're made," Lisa told her. "He isn't a bad man, he just didn't have a proper upbringing."

"Oh, good God!" Cy said harshly, glaring at her, having kept his mouth shut as long as possible without imploding. The woman's compassion hit him on a raw spot and made him furious.

Lisa's eyes were brown, big and wide and soft through the plastic frames of her glasses. "Excuse me?"

"Are you for real?" he asked curtly. "Listen, people dig their own graves and they climb into them. Nothing excuses cruelty."

"You tell her!" Bonnie said, agreeing.

Lisa recognized her taciturn neighbor from a previous encounter, long ago. He'd come right up to her when she'd been pitching hay over the fence to her cat tle one day and told her outright that she should leave heavy work to her husband. Walt hadn't liked that comment, not at all. It had only been a few days after he'd let her do the same thing while he flirted with a pretty blond parcel delivery employee. Worse, Walt thought that Lisa had encouraged Cy's interference somehow and they'd had a fight—not the first in their very brief marriage. She didn't like the tall man and her expression told him so. "I wasn't talking to you," she pointed out. "You don't know anything about my business."

His eyebrows rose half an inch. "I know that you overpay the hired help." He looked pointedly at her flat belly. "And that you're the last person who should be looked upon as a walking benevolence society."

"Hear, hear!" Joanne said again from behind Bonnie.

Lisa glared at her. "You can be quiet," she said.

"Let your erstwhile employee go," he told her. "I'll send one of my men over to spend nights in the bunk-house. Bonnie's right about one thing, you don't need to be by yourself after dark in such a remote place."

"I don't need your help," she said, glowering at him.

"Yes, you do. Your husband wouldn't have liked having you try to run that ranch alone," he added quietly, even though he didn't mean it, and he hoped that his dis taste for the late Walt Monroe didn't show. He still recalled watching Lisa heft a huge bale of hay while her husband stood not ten paces away flirting with a pretty blond woman. It was a miracle she hadn't miscarried, the way she hefted heavy things around. He wondered if she even knew the chance she was taking…

She was looking at him with different eyes now. The concern touched her despite her hostility. She sighed. "I guess you're right," she said softly. "He wouldn't have."

He hated the way that softness made him feel. He'd lost so much. Everything. He wouldn't admit, even to himself, how it felt to have those dark eyes look at him with tenderness. He swallowed down the ache in his throat.

She let her gaze fall to his arm, the one that had just been stitched, and her soft gasp was audible. "You've been hurt!"

"Two prescriptions, Mr. Parks," Bonnie said with a grin, holding up a prescription sack. She bent to pick up the package, a strand of her short blond hair falling around her pretty bespectacled face. "And Dr. Coltrain said that if you don't take this pain medication, he'll have me flogged," she added impishly.

"We can't have that, I guess," Cy murmured dryly.

"Glad you agree." She accepted his credit card as Lisa turned to go.

"You drive into town?" Cy asked the widow.

"Uh, well, no, the car's got a broken water pump," she confessed. "I rode in with old Mr. Murdock."

"He'll be at the lodge meeting until midnight," he pointed out.

"Just until nine. I thought I'd go to the library and wait."

"You need your rest," Cy said curtly. "No sense in waiting until bedtime for a ride. I'll drive you home. It's on my way."

"Go with him," Bonnie said firmly as she waited for Cy to put his credit card back into his wallet and sign the ticket. "Don't argue," she added when Lisa opened her mouth. "I'll phone the lodge and tell Mr. Murdock you got a ride."

"Were you ever in the army?" Cy asked the young woman with a rare twinkle in his green eyes.

She grinned. "Nope. But it's their loss."

"Amen," he said.

"Mr. Parks…" Lisa began, trying to escape.

Cy took her arm, nodded to Bonnie and herded Lisa out of the pharmacy onto the street where his big red Ford Expedition was parked. On the way they ran into the second pharmacist, a dark-eyed woman with equally dark hair.

"Hi, Nancy!" Lisa said with a grin.

Nancy gave a gamine smile. "Don't tell me, the line's two miles long already."

"Three. Want to go home with me?" Lisa asked.

Nancy sighed. "Don't I wish. See you!"

Nancy went on toward the pharmacy and Lisa turned back to let Cy open the door of the Expedition for her. "Imagine you with a red vehicle," she said dryly. "I would have expected black."

"It was the only one they had in stock and I was in a hurry. Here." He helped her up into the huge vehicle.

Manual for Soil Analysis - Monitoring and Assessing Soil Bioremediation: 5 (Soil Biology), by Rosa Margesin, Franz Schinner

Reliable methods for monitoring and assessing soil quality are a prerequisite for successful soil bioremediation projects. The fifth volume of Soil Biology presents detailed descriptions of selected methods for evaluating, monitoring and assessing bioremediation treatments of soils contaminated with organic pollutants or heavy metals. Traditional soil investigation techniques, including chemical, physical and microbiological methods, are complemented by the most suitable modern methods, such as the use of bioreporter technology, immunological, ecotoxicological or molecular assays. Feasibility studies for bioremediation treatments complete the manual. Easy-to-follow protocols with step-by-step procedures, lists of the required equipment and reagents as well as notes on the evaluation and quality control allow immediate application. Short introductions to the principles and objectives help to assess the field of application of each procedure.

Review

From the reviews:

"This collection of edited chapters … forms a manual of methods of soil analysis applicable to soil bioremediation. It is, therefore, primarily a technical and reference collection. … Each chapter is well referenced … and clearly sets out in detail the methods, chemicals and steps for each of the analyses described. I would recommend this book to practicing soil scientists, students and those working in the field of environmental remediation. It should have a place in all university libraries." (Kevin G. Taylor, IBBS, Issue 12, 2007)

Historically exciting, intriquing and romantic

I've read reviews regarding the follow-up to 'Princess of Fire', 'Knight of Fire' and was disappointed to find that many readers considered 'Knight of Fire' 'boring' and 'unexciting'. However, 'Princess of Fire' opens with a fierce battle later called the Battle of Hastings and the inevitable capture of the king's daughter, Princess Fallon. Hence begins the attempt to bend or break the strong willed courageous princess, however, sparks flew between the then Lady Fallon and Count Alaric long before the Battle of Hastings. Shannon Drake/Heather Graham remains true to her nature in capturing your attention with an exciting and gut wrenching opening and then later leads you through a someone mediocre history of the hero and heroine's entwined lives that eventually catapults at the Battle of Hastings. The heroine is considered to be so courageous and determined to avenge her father's death, rid her beloved country of the invading Normans and restore the crown to an English head, that she is actually considered a serious threat to William the Conqueror. But alas, in the end, England is ruled by the Norman conqueror and the princess is ruled by the conqueror of her heart. In all, I've rated this particular Shannon Drake novel a 'four star'. Particularly since this is one Shannon Drake novel that I would actually purchase, especially after being disppointed with other Drake novels.

It Was Okay

I usually tend to shy away from the Norman/Saxon love stories because they usually include rape or enforced slavery. Princess of Fire was a pleasant surprise. It has an engaging storyline that sucks you right into it in the beginning.
The story begins with a fierce battle where the king of England (Harold) is killed and his daughter, Fallon, is taken prisoner by the hero. William The Conqueror has won the battle for England. The hero was cruel to the heroine but had good reason. The new king of england was perfectly willing to make an example of Fallon by having her executed should she try to start a Saxon uprising.
I started losing interest towards the middle of the story. The hero, Alaric, is King William's right hand man and, although he sympathises with the saxon people wants to stop any uprisings with a firm hand to prevent the deaths of innocent people. Fallon hates all Normans because they have killed her father and are tearing apart her homeland. They are on opposite sides of the battle and fight and screech at each other for nearly the whole story. Suddenly the heroine realizes that she loves the hero and wants to be with him. I don't know where that came from since all they have done is fight and have sex. It does not make it quite believeable.
I would have given this three stars, but the fighting became repetitive and started to annoy me. The author should have either cut this shorter or lengthened it so their "I Love You" moment was more believeable.

"Paul Boyer, a scholar's scholar and a teacher's teacher, has here encompassed the entirety of American history in an account that testifies on every page to his lifetime of deep and thoughtful learning, and to his remarkable powers of synthesis, concision, balance, and trenchantly lucid writing."--David M. Kennedy, author of Freedom From Fear: The American People in Depression and War, 1929-1945

Comprehensive, but not entirely accurate nor balanced
By dcreader
American History: A Very Short Introduction provides its reader with as comprehensive a look at American political, social and cultural history as is possible in under 200 small pages (the standard format for the "Very Short Introduction" series, whose books are not only short but small as well) and in a well written manner. Virtually every event, person of significance and movement in American history receives at least a mention, which must have been a difficult task to accomplish given the strictures. What it does not do, however, is provide consistently up to date scholarship or a proper sense of proportion of America's triumphs to failures. It also contains a few errors and some of Boyer's interpretations of events will provoke disagreement with those who do not share his political leanings.

Boyer essentially begins with the English settlement of North America, dispensing with the pre-Columbian native peoples, Leif Ericson and non-English Europeans in only a few pages. The colonial period is one of the book's strengths as Boyer explains the development of the English settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth and the social development of the New World as different from that of the Old. The events leading to the Revolution are also nicely cataloged, and Boyer takes us from the post-Revolutionary war period through the Gilded Age in a fairly conventional manner.

Some of Boyer's interpretations of events rely on dated scholarship, however. A simplistic search for foreign markets accounts entirely for the Spanish-American War. His account of the New Deal places the stock market crash in the role of catalyst of the Great Depression failing to mention the role of monetary policy, which is at the core of today's economic understanding. He also dredges up the traditional misconception that Americans' fondness for coffee dates from the Boston Tea Party and incorrectly cites the date of England's Glorious Revolution. Boyer also cites a famous utterance by Andrew Jackson in defiance of the Supreme Court that is considered apocryphal.

Although explicitly Boyer strives for objectivity he does not always achieve it. His account is generally well balanced through Reconstruction, but his leftward leanings emerge shortly thereafter and his interpretation of events from the Gilded Age to the present too often becomes predictable and selective. Progressives are, unsurprisingly for a University of Wisconsin professor, lauded and nearly every legislative enactment of the New Deal and Great Society is given space. Like many historians, though, Boyer mistakes these enactments as achievements in their own right, and rarely analyzes whether they, in fact, accomplished their goals. For instance, he credits President Clinton with welfare reform but never asks why a Democratic president would see the need to reform it in the first place. His characterization of today's Tea Party as an offshoot of the religious right ignores the firestorm that occurred a result of policies that were perceived to "bailout" the impecunious (whether on Wall Street, in the housing market or the auto industry) at the expense of those who had behaved in a fiscally responsible manner in the Tea Party members' views.

Boyer concludes by cataloging America's many challenges and faults as he finds them today. Nonetheless, he concludes that "when the balance is drawn, America's record of achievement in advancing human well-being may ultimately outweigh the rest and prove a more lasting measure of national greatness than transient imperial power, military might, or a mere abundance of ephemeral material goods." The reader will likely need consult another book to understand, however, why that is.
