I believe WINTER'S CAMP to be my first exposure to Jodi Thomas's writing. The book description explains the book's set-up very well, so I won't detail what happens or what it's about. I found James to be one of those quietly heroic, deeply honorable men who despite his own difficult past and years spent as a captain in the war, he's gentle, kind, patient, and the perfect match for Millie (the blue-eyed captive).

Out of necessity to the story, very little dialogue happens for the first third of the book or so. It jarred me to have so much introspection from both Millie and James, but given they were alone and she wasn't willing to speak much, the book unfolded the way it needed to. Still, once plenty of characters were on stage, not enough dialogue. I'm surprised the kindly widow (trying not to give too much away here) could help Millie blossom when James hadn't been able to. It was so incredibly sweet to see Millie's complete trust in James. As the book description discloses, it's that bone-deep trust in him that ends up being her greatest challenge. I'm still bugged that James was surprised and caught off guard to find (how to phrase this to not give away too much? I do hate spoilers) the big plot development near the end. Really? He's a man of the world, of experience. It just didn't ring true that he never once considered those particular consequences.

Oh well. He's honorable and kind, and with that, he won my heart.

Promising Start to new series.

Winter's Camp is a Western set in Texas at a time when land was just beginning to be divided up for ranches and towns for the white people. This book is a prequel and kicks off a new series by Jodi Thomas - the Ransom Canyon series.

It's a short and gentle story, giving the background to the beginnings of the new town. James is a kind but resolute man. When he spots Millie being mistreated as a slave he buys her for 'nothing', because she is regarded as nothing.

Millie is at first reticent and unsure. However as James' kindness continues she begins to open up. So much so that by the time he is ready to start his new holdings she is ready to find herself before she gives herself to anyone.

When James seeks information about her family he finds out that one of them is still possibly alive. James tracks the family member because he wants Millie to be happy. But will doing this be a mistake - one he comes to regret?

I always enjoy a western, a left over from reading my Dad's westerns as a child when I couldn't find anything else. Winter's Camp promises an interesting new series and I look forward to reading Ransom Canyon very soon.

A Ransom Canyon Historical Romance, Book 0.5

This novella is the prequel to Jodi Thomas's 'Ransom Canyon' series. Though its a quick read, I'm not sure if the 50 pages its purported to be is correct. It definitely seemed longer to me, but maybe that's just because there's a lot that goes on. I've read every historical romance this author has written, so when I saw this book I had to have it and lucky for me it was free. It's a beautiful love story about James Kirkland, a cowboy who trades a broken pocket-watch for a young captive. Millie was taken at just twelve-years-old and has spent six years being a slave and worse. This is their journey as we're given a glimpse into the past and how the Kirkland's began...

This was an emotional and heartfelt story. I adored James who simply wanted to help a lost and broken young woman. He had no ulterior motives and was a good and honest man. Millie dang near broke my heart on more than one occasion. Despite the hell she's been through, her innocence and sweetness continued to shine through. Her strength of character was something to be admired and I cheered her on the way to finding her self-worth. I fell in love with so many characters in this book and even though James was a little obtuse at times, he still stole my heart. A truly touching and memorable tale that I won't soon forget and would absolutely recommend!

Ekirch describes young Annesley's near abandonment to the Dublin streets through the greed-induced maneuvering of his father, Baron Altham, and Altham's mistress. Upon Altham's death, Jemmy's Uncle Richard perpetuated the lie that the boy was illegitimate and, later, that he had died. In 1728 Richard had 12-year-old Jemmy kidnapped and transported to the colony of Delaware as an indentured servant. After 13 years of virtual slavery, Jemmy escaped and returned to the British Isles. His father, Arthur Annesley, the fourth Baron Altham, turned James (called Jemmy) into the streets of Dublin to fend for himself at the age of eight. Fascinating true story of kidnapping, greed, and corruption among the British aristocracy

Ekirch's book tells the true story which inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write his classic book KIDNAPPED. Truth, as often, is wilder than fiction. The heir to a title and fortune, neglected by his drunken father and vicious stepmother, is turned out to live on the streets and then kidnapped and sold, basically, into slavery. I didn't know that the indentured servants that came to America when it was still "the colonies" were often sent against their will, and in effect owned by whoever bought them on the block. Any bad behavior added to their sentence, so they were in effect sold for far longer than the seven-year term. It took Jemmy Annesley something like twenty years to gain his freedom and return to Britain to claim his title and inheritance.
The law cases that ensued, the corruption of the courts and the British rule of Ireland, take your breath away. Ekirch does a brilliant job of probing the seamy lives of dissolute noblemen, and making you feel the appalling injustice of the times. What happened to Annesley was, to some degree, normal--it was a scandal only because it involved the aristocracy. The true scandal is the corruption of the legal system and the rottenness of the society that created it--which is also the society that gave birth to the United States.
The story of this one mistreated, orphaned, abused boy, who became a man determined to reclaim what was his, becomes a gripping insight into all of 18th-century Anglo-Irish society, top to bottom. It's a terrific book. I couldn't put it down.

The Ultimate Cold Case!

Ekirch's account of family lineage gone wrong is the ultimate investigation into crimes of another era. He approaches the subject matter with careful objectiveness - and the reader quickly realizes why - as just about everyone is carrying around some serious moral baggage! It's easy to root against Uncle Richard, but harder to fully embrace Jemmy as a hero worthy of our deepest sympathies. Sure enough, the outcome doesn't disappoint. I won't spoil it, but no one (except maybe the lawyers) rides into the sunset unscathed. Indeed, truth is stranger than fiction. This stuff is far more compelling than the glitzy, empty calorie crime dramas of today.

Aside from simply being a first class yarn, perhaps the most compelling reason to read Birthright is to appreciate how a top historian carefully untangles the events of the distant past. Ekirch succeeds in weaving a compelling mosaic of lives lived and events transpired almost 300 years ago. It's nothing short of amazing. Museums house the artifacts of the times, but a great historian's work is the only true portal into the collective ethos of these bygone societies. From the intricacies of the English legal system, to the weather patterns (he clearly visited all these locations!), to the time it took for a speedy horseman to convey news from Dublin to London (5 days), Ekirch has compiled an incredible piece of research and understanding. Bravo!

It is of such historical significance it must be told and retold to inspire us all
during these times of war,disasters, and famine. I loved the lesson learned about the
importance of hope and perseverance.

A simple and effective method of building referrals.

No matter what business you are in, if a large percentage of your leads are not coming from referrals, you're missing a very important aspect of generating new business. In their book THE REFERRAL CODE, authors Larry Pinci and Phil Glosserman will show you how to carry exactly what the sub-title suggests; how to UNLOCK A CONSTANT STREAM OF BUSINESS THROUGH THE POWER OF YOUR RELATIONSHIPS.

If you've read Pinci & Glosserman's earlier book, Sell the Feeling, then you know this book is well worth reading. This is a business allegory and is a continuation of sorts of the allegory told in their earlier book. Neil, the main subject in Sell the Feeling, is now married to a young woman named Jennifer. When Jennifer finds herself under the supervision of a new sales manager that is a big advocate of cold calling and has set almost untenable benchmarks, Neil suggests she turn to his old mentor, Sam for guidance.

In the story that follows, Sam takes Jennifer under his wing and over the next few weeks, lays out a plan for generating new business that he calls the referral code. Pinci and Glosserman do a superb job of covering every detail you need to know to put the referral code to work for you no matter what business you are in. I am convinced if you follow what is outlined here, you will generate more referrals than you have ever had.

When you are baking, unlike stove top cooking, you're not really following a recipe, you're following a formula and that formula must be carried out with precision and in the proper order. That's what the referral code is. It's a formula that when carried out step by step, will produce the results you are looking for.

More and more today, we are finding books offering additional on-line information and tools, only most of the time that additional information doesn't amount to much. I've had a chance to look this over the free additional online information here can be put to work immediately to help you implement your own referral code. I really enjoyed reading the free download; `What Every Business Person Needs to Know About Making and Maintaining Agreements". If you manage a sales staff, you will find very useful information here.

I've read a few other books about building referrals and they've all been helpful, but The Referral Code outlined by Pinci & Glosserman is the simplest and makes the most sense. This is a common sense approach to putting the power of networking to work for you. I highly recommend this book.

a Must Read

I just finished Phil and Larry's Referral Code and loved it. It is a quick read and loaded with so many great ideas, many of which are just a common sense way of looking at asking for referrals. I can't wait to start using their systems as I know it will increase my referral business substantially. The best part of the book was hearing when is the best time to ask for referrals as we all have passively asking for a referrals at the wrong time. Great job guys as the story telling is the best way to convey the message. I just ordered 10 copies to give to people. I am 100% confident this book if used correctly is worth its weight in gold. Anthony

A good text, but could use some work

This is a relatively good text. It provides a good overview of research methodology, but it does have problems. Specifically, it can be a little hard to follow at times. One of my main complaints is that the author uses really nice graphic organizers, but does not number them. It would be much easier to follow if the graphic organizers and the paragraphs in the text had matching numbers, letters, etc. Also, sometimes the author changes the order of the paragraphs. The graphic organizer will be listed one way, but the paragraphs will be listed another way. Overall, I like the text, but I think it could be even better with some additional editing. On the positive side, I do like the addition of the sidebars in this edition. They help significantly with understanding.

HORRIBLE! AVOID AT ALL COSTS

The material is not presented in a way that speaks to those who are in the education and counseling fields, despite the title. This book is technical, complex, and made me (a straight A Master's Student) feel like a complete idiot. Honestly, I knew more about research before opening this book--it sucked knowledge out of my brain! If you are taking a class with a department/teacher dumb enough to use this text, drop the class and try another school or semester! Yes, it's that bad. And no, I've never cared enough to review a textbook before now.

Not a very well written text

The quality of the text as far as condition was outstanding but the authors text does not flow well, is a bit boring, and its a difficult read. I have read other books on evidence based research that are much more interesting. Though the authors use examples in the text which is better than many, the flow is choppy and not very enjoyable.
