Excellent

Since some of Peter Enns' recent writings have touched on controversial subjects, what often gets discussed when Enns' name comes up is what you can believe about the Bible and still be considered "in the club." This is a shame, and one thing that often gets ignored is that Enns, whether you agree with his conclusions or not, is an excellent theologian and an excellent writer.

Ecclesiastes lacks the controversy of Genesis, but it is in no way an easy book to read or understand. This commentary is brief - about 220 pages of reading - but I felt that it did an excellent job of addressing both the text itself and interpretation of the text for 21st-century believers. You can also tell that Enns has done his homework and is familiar with the historical theology of Ecclesiastes.

What I've always appreciated about Enns, again whether I agree with his conclusions or not, is his willingness to be honest about interpretive challenges that we might have with any given text and his willingness to not shy away from certain texts, even if clear interpretation not possible (even for a theologian to admit that a certain text might not have a clear interpretation is a breath of fresh air to me). I love Enns' approach to hermeneutics, which he outlines in the closing chapters of the book, and his interpretations generally just abound in common sense.

Ecclesiastes is a book that many Christians skip due to its difficulty. Enns' commentary makes the book approachable and pertinent, and I highly recommend it.

Good Technical Hermeneutic Review

This is a good, technical hermeneutic review of Ecclesiastes. It is more or less a line by line review of the book. I appreciate the diligence that the author did in dissecting the Scripture but it is a bit on the dry side. I do not want to downplay the importance of "rightly dividing the Word", however, sometimes there is a flow in writing that conveys an entire thought or thoughts throughout a paragraph. Since this is a line by line analysis, it is just a bit choppy in some places. Having said all that, the author has done his research with regard to the original meaning of the Hebrew words and that part of the writing was extremely helpful. Additionally, the author highlights the importance of Hebrew verb tenses or the significance of poetic writing. Those sections were very helpful as well. I had to write a paper on Ecclesiastes for a seminary course and found this book along with Holoman's Ecclesiastes review very helpful for my paper. I will hand the author an extreme compliment in this review. His book, The Moody's Handbook of Theology is one of the finest theology reference books available. I utilize it extensively in not only studying for sermon/Sunday school preparation but also in my seminary studies. Paul Ennis has an excellent, technical mind with regard to the Bible and theology.

Good Balance Book on Ecclesiastes

Great balance between critical engagement with text while maintaining an overarching Christian outlook. I especially liked how exegesis of passages was kept separate from the theological engagement and contemporary application.

Great read. You'll love it.

As a former history teacher, Christian, and self-described Werdnerd, this historical novel hit the jackpot for me. For a few years now, the only books I read are on Ancient Rome, Christianity, and grandiloquent or underused words. Dr. Maier weaves a fascinating story, based on historical fact, focusing on the actions of the notorious Roman emperor Nero, and the early development and spread of Christianity. He even coins an interesting word "kindunophilia" (the love of danger) that I will feature in a future volume of my Visualize Your Vocabulary: Turn Any SAT/ACT Word into a Picture and Remember It Forever (Volume 2) series. Great read. You'll love it.

The Flames of History

After reading his Pontius Pilate novel, I was hot for this one. While the same extensive research served as a solid foundation for this story and the characters involved, I personally found it a notch below P.P. Don't get me wrong, it's an exciting enough tale to be worth taking in. But I had the feeling during the first third of the book that I was reliving Graves' "Claudius the God" almost verbatim! I found the dialogue between characters sometimes not quite realistic. The author seems a little awkward with handling the romantic scenes here but never gets very graphic with the passion or violence contained herein. Its an easy read and does hold your attention. No maps, pictures, charts, or other images in the paperback version I bought. Chapters are just numbered but the book is divided into 5 sections: each with its' own title which gives you some idea of what is coming.

This novel presents a refreshing though graphic perspective of the political and cultural climate that would have been encountered by the Apostle Paul and those under rule of the Roman Empire at that time who were beginning to embrace Christianity. It reveals a sometimes shocking portrayal of just how much physical and emotional sacrifice was involved with embracing a spiritual view that ran counter to the paranoia of the emperor and those who pandered to him. I found this novel to be gripping and at the same time very helpful in understanding just what Christ followers of that era had at stake. As current day American Christians, we might think we would follow Christ no matter the odds, but placing myself in the situations portrayed in the book presented an eye opening portrayal of what being persecuted for following Christ really meant for many who preceded us.

A History With A View

Hooper's book panoramas the history of Hellenic civilization from Mycenae to the Alexandrine Age. His grasp of art, archaeology, architecture, and complete command of his sources inform the magistrial prose that pours off of every page. That said, the size of the book is manageable. Hooper's view of history is similar to Thucydides: non-idealistic, and mistrustful of extreme forms of democracy. His views come as through strongly in interpeting the course of Greek history and civilization in this book as they did in his lectures when I was his student at Wayne State. This is most evident in his chapters on the three Athenian generations streching fron Marathon to defeat in the Peloponesian War. The feeling of inevitability, as the city-state moves from triumphant action to hurbis, exemplified by the debate over the expedition to Syracuse,to defeat at the hands of Sparta, reads like a Greek tragedy. Superbly written basic history of Ancient Greece

I read this book in college over thirty years ago as a textbook in my Greek History class. It is one of the best history books I have ever read. If you are wanting to explore the great classic primary writings on history such as Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian War, or if you want to read the best philosophical works ever, such as Plato's dialogues, or if you want to read the great dramas by Aeschylus, Sophocles, or Euripides, or even if you want to read the compelling historical novels of Mary Renault, reading this remarkable survey of ancient Greek history and culture will give you exactly what you need to understand those works better.

A couple of years after my class in Greek history, I gave a copy of this book to my father, an avid reader. He loved the book and told me that it was the best general history he had ever read. I concur and I hope that colleges are still teaching Greek history with this book.

An amazing exploration of ancient Greek history brought to life by a gifted and brilliant historian and philosopher

I just purchased a used copy of this book. It has been nearly thirty years since I last read it and I can scarcely believe how time has so quickly past. I had the privilege of taking a course in ancient Greek history taught by Dr. Finley Hooper and for for some reason found myself thinking about the course and how enjoyable it was. Few historical texts bring history to life the way this books does. If you are at all interested in ancient Greek History you need to read this brilliant book. Dr. Hooper was an amazing instructor with a very pointed sense of humor. He was not so unlike Professor Kingsfield from the Paperchase for those who have seen the movie or series. I will share a real story. During class he began discussing the Greek ideal of beauty... the amazing statues, etc. Dr. Finely commented on how ancient Greek statues were able to augment and exaggerate beauty to convey the very Platonic form of beauty to the mortal mind. He the joked and said "no one is as perfect or beautiful as a Greek stature.. let alone Mr. Vitale" It appeared he was making a joke at my expense.... I was a fat non-so-attractive sort who none-the-less commanded a certain amount of attention from peers who respected my intellect. At first I was chagrined. Before I responded, a woman in the class stood to defend my honor, chastising Dr. Finely for his callousness. Dr. Finely pointed at her and instructed her to sit down. He then said "Ms. Jones, Mr. Vitale knows that it is not important what I am saying about him. What is important is that he is a person worthy of comment which is something very rare indeed!" I am sure he enjoyed toying with me and Ms. Jones. But, the reality of the situation was that he was teaching us all a valuable lesson about what "beauty" (the good and the true) really means in the spirit of the ancient Greek philosophers. No one left that class unchanged for the better. If you have a chance to pick up a copy of this book... snatch it without hesitation.

great for anyone who wants more free time

The author's tongue-in-cheek style coupled with no nonsense and sensible advise takes the drudgery out of housework. I have been able to save so much time and work half as hard to keep the same amount of floor space clean. When we built our new house, I picked up a lot of his suggestions for floor coverings, paint and windows that make cleaning a snap. I have gotten this book for wedding showers, birthdays, and thank-you's -- it makes the perfect gift!

A Very Useful Book!

This book is the most useful book on cleaning I have read. The author owns a cleaning business and shares tips on how to very efficiently and effectively both clean and de-clutter your home. He also discusses ways to keep the house from getting dirty to start with. I've used his tips for years now and have just re-read my copy of this and refreshed my memory [and got even more ideas!].
The author also writes very humorously, so it is an easy and fun book to read. Nothing too heavy but full of great ideas and suggestions. He is writing to an older generation perhaps, his ideas about housewives seem a bit out of date, but otherwise it is an enjoyable and extremely helpful book.

Interesting if you are from the area the author lived in

I found this story interesting because I grew up in the area this story takes place and I knew most of the people in it. It's a quick read but the language/editing are terrible. Also, I would consider a good portion of this book fictional.

My take --- pass unless you know the author or other characters in the book.
